Seattle Drive-By Shootings: Rainier Beach Neighborhood on Edge
SEATTLE – The Seattle Police Department (SPD) is investigating a series of concerning incidents of gun violence in the Rainier Beach neighborhood of South Seattle. These events, occurring within days of each other, have left residents on edge and prompted increased police presence.
Recent Shooting Investigation
On Saturday afternoon, at approximately 4:20 p.m., officers responded to reports of automatic gunfire near the intersection of 51st Avenue South, Rainier Avenue South, and Barton Place South. Upon arrival, investigators discovered over 50 spent shell casings scattered across a two-block radius. Preliminary investigations suggest a sedan occupied by multiple male suspects fired upon a fleeing victim.
The victim, thankfully, was not injured but was reportedly uncooperative with police. As of this report, no suspects are in custody. Detectives from the Gun Violence Reduction Unit have cordoned off the area and are actively investigating. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Violent Crimes Tip Line at 206-233-5000. Anonymous tips are accepted.
Separate Stabbing Incident
In a separate incident on Saturday evening, around 7 p.m., SPD responded to a reported stabbing in the 8600 block of Renton Avenue South. A man sustained minor injuries to the face and is currently receiving medical attention. The suspect remains at large, and the motive for the attack is still under investigation.
Earlier Drive-By Shooting
Just days prior, on Wednesday afternoon, an 18-year-old was injured in another drive-by shooting near Rainier Avenue South and South Othello Street. The teenager, a passenger in a vehicle, was grazed by a bullet and transported to Harborview Medical Center in stable condition. Over 30 bullet casings were recovered from multiple crime scenes, including near Holly Park Drive South and South Myrtle Place. A vehicle with bullet damage was later located near the South Precinct.
King County Gun Violence Trends
Despite these recent incidents, King County Prosecutor Leesa Manion reported a positive trend in 2025, with a 35% decrease in shots fired incidents compared to 2024. The county recorded 558 fewer shots fired incidents, and a 22% reduction in fatal shooting victims. However, the recent events in Rainier Beach underscore the ongoing need for vigilance and community safety initiatives.
