Haotong Li Overcomes Illness to Shine at Augusta National

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Haotong Li demonstrated remarkable fortitude at the Masters Tournament, battling not only the challenging 18 holes of Augusta National and 90 other competitors, but also a significant bout of illness. After a solid opening round of one-under 71, Li followed it up with an impressive 69 in Round 2, positioning himself in a tie for seventh place, just eight strokes behind leader Rory McIlroy after 36 holes.

A Difficult Day on the Course (and Off)

However, Li’s performance was all the more impressive considering the physical discomfort he was experiencing. He openly admitted to feeling unwell, attributing it to a night spent frequently visiting the restroom. “Especially went to the toilet last night a lot of times,” Li shared, “and this morning when I got to the golf course and still feeling really bad and kind of, like, live in the toilet.”

The illness significantly impacted his preparation. “I didn’t hit many balls on the driving range. I was feeling really, really bad. No energy, fuzzy, want to throw up something,” he explained. His initial plan was simply to play a few holes and assess his condition, prepared to withdraw if his health deteriorated further. “I actually just planned to play a few holes, see how it goes. If really sick, then I probably just decide not to. So glad I survived today.”

A Round of Clutch Shots and Birdies

Despite his struggles, Li’s scorecard tells a story of resilience and skill. He navigated the course with precision, overcoming a bogey on the 4th and 7th holes after an early birdie on the 2nd. His back nine was particularly strong, highlighted by birdies on the par-5 13th (skillfully avoiding Rae’s Creek), the par-4 14th (nearly holing out for eagle), the par-5 15th (a masterful chip shot), and the par-3 16th (coming close to a hole-in-one).

The par-5 15th was a particularly challenging shot. “Was super tough chip over there,” he said, reflecting on the difficulty of the approach.

The Masters’ Healing Power?

Following his impressive round, Li reported feeling significantly better, prompting a playful question about whether Augusta National and the Masters Tournament had a healing effect. “Definitely,” Li responded with a smile. “Major makes me feeling good.”

Haotong Li’s performance at the Masters is a testament to his dedication, skill, and mental fortitude. His ability to compete at the highest level while battling illness is truly inspiring.
