Vivica A. Fox Returns to Reignite the Drama on The Young and the Restless
Get ready, fans! Vivica A. Fox is making a triumphant return to The Young and the Restless on Tuesday, April 7th, reprising her iconic role as Stephanie Simmons. “Stephanie is back,” Fox declares with a mischievous glint, “And Stephanie has a lot of secrets that will be revealed.”
A Surprise Return with Perfect Timing
For Fox, who first graced the screens as Stephanie from 1994-1995, this return wasn’t something she anticipated. “It was a total surprise, to be very honest with you,” she shares. “I’ve just signed with a new agent, Innovative Artists, and was just relaxing at home when my agent called with incredible news: ‘Young and the Restless’ wants to know if you’d be interested in coming back as Stephanie Simmons!’ I couldn’t believe it.”
The Magic of a Reunion with Shemar Moore
The excitement skyrocketed when Fox learned that Shemar Moore, who previously portrayed Stephanie’s love interest, Malcolm Winters, was also returning. “I thought, ‘Get out of here! The potential of that would be incredible,’” she recalls. “If they could make it happen, I was definitely interested. It’s amazing!”
Executive producer and head writer Josh Griffith outlined a compelling storyline that would reunite the characters. “He explained that Malcolm would reach out to Stephanie, needing her assistance, and from there, the story unfolds,” Fox relays. “So far, it’s been surprise after surprise. The audience is going to be on the edge of their seats as Stephanie and Malcolm reconnect, and I’m thrilled to be back to finish Stephanie’s business.”
A Seamless Return to Daytime Drama
Despite the three-decade gap, stepping back onto the set felt remarkably familiar. “When I filmed the first day, I saw that some of the actors from 30 years ago are still here,” she marvels. “It was a wonderful homecoming. I even got starstruck seeing Melody [Thomas Scott, Nikki Newman]!”
While the pace of daytime television is demanding – “That first week was like boot camp! We were doing a mini-movie a week!” – Fox felt prepared thanks to her experience with Lifetime films.
Remembering Kristoff St. John
Her return also brought poignant memories of the late Kristoff St. John (Neil Winters). “I walked into the producers’ offices, and there was a huge portrait of Kristoff,” she shares, her voice filled with emotion. “Kristoff and I started on Generations years ago. I did my first love scene with him and was so nervous! We also did a Lifetime film together, A Christmas Cruise, and were planning a sequel before he passed away. It brought tears to my eyes. My heart welled up, and I cried a little. He was like my first love, and my love for him will never die.”
Stephanie Simmons: A Successful Doctor Returns
Stephanie herself has evolved. “She was always driven to become the best doctor ever,” Fox recalls. “She loved her career, but got a little sidetracked with Malcolm.” Now, Stephanie is a highly accomplished doctor living in Manhattan, whose career is thriving. “Unfortunately, she lost her husband, so she’s still career-driven and successful, and that’s when Malcolm re-enters her life, bringing the drama.”
A Familiar Spark with Malcolm Winters
The chemistry between Fox and Moore remains undeniable. “It’s so funny because I’ve seen Shemar throughout the years, and it’s always been filled with love and laughter,” she says. “I call him Shemarsky, and he always says I’m the only one who calls him that! We also did a film together called Motives, but hadn’t seen each other in a while since Criminal Minds and S.W.A.T., so it was great to work together again.”
Their off-screen connection translated seamlessly on screen. “Everyone checked their ego at the door, so there were no barriers to overcome. Except he has a Ferrari now! I couldn’t believe it. He’s like, ‘Oh, it’s one of my eight cars!’ Meanwhile, I drive my Tesla. But we’ve both grown and been very successful, and I’m very proud of him.”
A Full-Circle Moment
Fox’s journey has come full circle. The Young and the Restless played a pivotal role in launching her career, leading to her breakthrough role in Independence Day. “It was the beginning of my destiny,” she reflects. “I’m so grateful to The Young and the Restless because it literally opened the doors for me. There was no question I’d come back home again. They’ve treated me so well, and it’s been excellent. I’m forever grateful and want to make some daytime magic.”
