Orioles vs Pirates: Konnor Griffin Makes a Splash in MLB Debut
PITTSBURGH – The highly anticipated arrival of baseball’s top prospect, Konnor Griffin, didn’t disappoint as he debuted Friday afternoon in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ home opener against the Baltimore Orioles. In front of a roaring crowd of 38,986 at PNC Park, Griffin immediately made his mark, delivering an RBI double in his very first Major League at-bat.
Griffin’s Historic Debut
Batting seventh and starting at shortstop, the 19-year-old Griffin sparked a four-run second inning for the Pirates, ultimately leading to a 5-4 victory over the Orioles. His first swing resulted in a line drive to left-center field, clocked at 105.8 mph, showcasing the five-tool talent that has scouts buzzing.
Before his call-up, Griffin dominated in Triple-A Indianapolis, slashing .438/.571/.625 in just five games this season. Last year, he earned Baseball America’s Minor League Player of the Year award, hitting .333 with 21 home runs, 94 RBIs, and an impressive 65 stolen bases. Drafted ninth overall in the 2024 MLB Draft, Griffin’s potential is immense.
A Look at Griffin’s At-Bats
- First At-Bat (2nd Inning): Griffin crushed a 1-2 curveball from Kyle Bradish for an RBI double, scoring on a subsequent single by Jared Triolo. This made him the first teenager with a hit in his MLB debut since Jurickson Profar in 2012.
- Second At-Bat (4th Inning): Griffin demonstrated patience, earning a five-pitch walk and advancing to second on another hit.
- Third At-Bat (5th Inning): Despite a strikeout, Griffin showcased impressive plate discipline, successfully challenging a call and extending the at-bat.
- Fourth At-Bat (8th Inning): Griffin grounded out to the pitcher, completing his debut with a 1-for-3 performance, including a double, a walk, and a run scored.
Breaking Records and Making History
Griffin is the first teenaged position player to debut in MLB since Juan Soto in 2018 and the first teenager to debut for the Pirates since Aramis Ramirez in 1998.
