NFL Coaches Picture: A Haircut and a Missed Opportunity
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr recently highlighted the increasing financial burden on fans to follow the NFL, as streaming services fragment and subscription costs rise. This debate unfolds as the league navigates its special legal treatment under scrutiny from regulators.
Todd Monken, the newly appointed head coach of the Cleveland Browns, experienced a humorous setback before even stepping onto the field. He eagerly anticipated the annual NFL league meeting in Phoenix, where all 32 head coaches were scheduled for a group photo. However, a perfectly timed haircut led to a perfectly missed opportunity.
Monken meticulously planned a haircut specifically for the photo, believing he had the timing down to the minute. He noted a noon Pacific Time slot in his agenda. But a chance encounter with Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen revealed the photo had already been taken. It wasn’t a matter of being late; a coaches meeting concluded early, prompting an impromptu photoshoot – without Monken.
Not Alone on the Sidelines
Monken wasn’t the only coach absent from the group picture. Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay also missed the snapshot. While the photo op was lost, Monken hasn’t shied away from discussing the crucial question facing the Browns: the quarterback competition.
The Browns’ Quarterback Conundrum
All eyes are on Monken and his staff as they determine the Browns’ starting quarterback for the upcoming season. The contenders include veteran Deshaun Watson, potentially returning from injury in 2026, Shedeur Sanders, and Dillon Gabriel. The competition is fierce, and the decision will shape the Browns’ season.
With the Browns’ offseason program set to begin on April 7th, Monken addressed the quarterback workload. “I don’t expect the reps to be divided equally,” he stated, signaling a clear order in his mind, though he remained tight-lipped about the specifics. He indicated the decision will be based on past performance and how the previous season concluded.
Based on recent performance, Shedeur Sanders appears to have an early advantage. Watson was recovering from an Achilles injury, and Sanders started the final seven games of the season after Gabriel struggled and was sidelined with an injury. Sanders even secured a victory against the Las Vegas Raiders.
However, the true pecking order remains a mystery until the Browns’ program officially kicks off next week. The quarterback battle promises to be one of the most compelling storylines of the NFL offseason.
