DRC vs Bermuda: One Step Away from World Cup Glory
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) stands just one step away from a second-ever appearance at the FIFA World Cup finals. The Leopards, featuring Belgian-based stars Matthieu Epolo and Joris Kayembe, must overcome either Jamaica or Bermuda in a crucial showdown next Tuesday in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The DRC is among six nations vying for the final two spots in the expanded 2026 World Cup through the intercontinental playoff tournament, taking place from March 26th to 31st. A single victory will send the Leopards back to the global stage, a remarkable 52 years after their last participation as Zaire.
Direct Path to the Final
Like Iraq, the DRC received a direct pass to the final round due to their higher FIFA ranking at the time of the playoff draw. This means they bypass the semi-final stage, awaiting the winner of the Jamaica vs. Bermuda clash.
At the Estadio Akron in Zapopan, Bermuda (FIFA 178) will face Jamaica (FIFA 70), featuring former Genk player Leon Bailey, on Friday, March 27th. The victor of this contest will then challenge Joris Kayembe (Genk), Matthieu Epolo (Standard), and the Congolese Leopards (FIFA 48) on March 31st.
Other Playoff Matchups
In another semi-final, Bolivia (FIFA 76) is favoured against Suriname (FIFA 122) on March 26th in Monterrey. While Bolivia has a history with three World Cup appearances (1930, 1950, and 1994), Suriname is chasing their first-ever qualification. However, they would still need to defeat Iraq (FIFA 58) on April 1st to secure their place.
The stakes are incredibly high, and the DRC’s players, including those plying their trade in the Belgian league, are determined to make history. The nation eagerly awaits the outcome, hoping to witness the Leopards roar their way to the 2026 World Cup.
