Will Wade: Committed to Building a Legacy at NC State
RALEIGH – As the NC State Wolfpack concluded their season, speculation arose regarding head coach Will Wade and a potential return to his former post at LSU. Despite the whispers, Wade emphatically reaffirmed his commitment to the Wolfpack, outlining a clear vision for the program’s future. The rumors intensified following NC State’s ACC Tournament loss to Virginia and continued even after a disappointing First Four exit in the 2026 NCAA Tournament.
LSU Speculation and Wade’s Response
The buzz surrounding Wade’s possible return to Baton Rouge reached a fever pitch, fueled by LSU’s struggles under current coach Matt McMahon. However, Wade remained steadfast in his dedication to NC State. When directly questioned about the rumors, he responded with characteristic honesty:
“No. Is the job open there? No? Listen, let me be very clear: I’m excited at NC State. I was hired at NC State to do a job. This wasn’t going to take one year. I’ve already met with our administration about next year and some of the changes that we need to make… We’re going to win and we’re going to win big at NC State.”
A Changed Coach, A New Focus
NC State athletic director Boo Corrigan selected Wade believing he had matured during his time away from the spotlight. The past controversies that marred his tenure at LSU, stemming from a wiretap incident and NCAA investigation, were viewed as lessons learned. Wade himself acknowledged a shift in perspective, reflecting on his previous departure from VCU:
“At the time, I loved VCU… I was too eager to leave like everybody else had left there. It’s a great program… It’s an incredible basketball spot.”
Wade’s approach now emphasizes a team-first mentality, encompassing players, staff, and administration. His personal life has also evolved, with his wife, a North Carolina alumna, and daughter, Caroline, deeply rooted in the Raleigh community.
Looking Ahead: Building a Sustainable Program
Despite the First Four loss to Texas, Wade expressed a renewed determination to build a winning program at NC State. He acknowledged the need for roster improvements and a more focused approach to recruiting.
“We’re going to go back and when the wheels hit the ground, we’re going to start preparing for next year… Losing in Dayton is unacceptable. We’ve got to do a much better job getting guys that fit us in the future.”
This loss served as a wake-up call, reigniting the same competitive fire that drove him to LSU years ago. However, this time, Wade appears firmly committed to establishing a lasting legacy with the Wolfpack. He understands the rhythm of NC State and is focused on building a program that consistently competes at the highest level of ACC basketball.
