Canadien MTL Comeback: Caufield’s 44th Goal Fuels Thrilling Victory
MONTREAL – After a shaky start against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Montreal Canadiens mounted a remarkable comeback, securing a crucial win thanks to Cole Caufield’s impressive 44th goal of the season. Here’s a breakdown of the Canadiens’ powerful performance against one of the NHL’s top contenders.
Caufield’s 44th: A Milestone Moment
With three goals already under his belt in the previous game, silencing Cole Caufield seemed like a daunting task for the Hurricanes. The Canadiens’ star forward capitalized on a rebound in the second period, leveling the score at 2-2 with his 44th goal of the campaign. The play showcased Caufield’s signature ability to finish, supported by sustained offensive zone pressure from his teammates.
Caufield has been on a tear, racking up seven goals and five assists for 12 points in his last six games. Fans are eagerly watching to see if he can reach the 50-goal mark – a feat last achieved by Stéphane Richer in the 1989-1990 season.
Slafkovsky’s Selflessness
In this exciting pursuit of Caufield’s 50th goal, Juraj Slafkovsky demonstrated remarkable sportsmanship. A shot from Noah Dobson deflected off Slafkovsky’s leg and into the net. Initially, Slafkovsky didn’t claim the goal, but the NHL credited him with the deflection. His unselfish play continued later in the period when, during a power play, he had a scoring opportunity but instead opted to pass to Caufield.
Canadiens Rebound in the Second, Demidov Shines
The Canadiens were fortunate to only be down 2-1 after the first period. The Hurricanes dominated the initial frame with their speed and relentless pressure, effectively bottling up the Canadiens in their own zone. Whatever adjustments were made during the intermission clearly worked, as Montreal emerged as a transformed team in the second period.
Ivan Demidov was a key catalyst in this turnaround, causing significant trouble for the Hurricanes’ defensemen, Jalen Chatfield and K’Andre Miller. The efforts paid off as Caufield and Slafkovsky both scored within four minutes of each other, shifting the lead to 3-2 for Montreal.
Demidov nearly added another goal but redeemed himself with a spectacular fourth goal for his team. He’s quickly becoming a player to watch for the Canadiens.
Dobes Stands Tall
Early in the game, the Canadiens committed several turnovers, giving the Hurricanes numerous scoring chances. However, goaltender Jakub Dobes, facing 43 shots, limited the damage. His crucial saves, including a stop on Taylor Hall during a breakaway and another against Jordan Staal in the slot, were pivotal. Dobes’ 41 saves, including 33 consecutive after allowing the first two goals, represent a career high.
Dobes continued to shine while the Canadiens were shorthanded, killing off a penalty to Slafkovsky in the third period.
The Canadiens will next face the Blue Jackets on Thursday before embarking on a challenging five-game road trip.
