Michelsen Tennis: Rising Star Thrives Under Pressure at Miami Open

MIAMI – North American Alex Michelsen demonstrated remarkable composure and a unique approach to competition at the Miami Open, thriving despite playing against a vocal crowd. The 21-year-old revealed that the challenge of overcoming hostile support actually elevates his game during crucial moments.

“I like when people want me to lose,” Michelsen confessed to a group of reporters, including CLAY, following his hard-fought victory. “I just had to hit the silencer, unfortunately,” he added, referring to his celebratory gesture after securing the win.

Confronting the Crowd & Securing Victory

Michelsen defeated Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the third round of the Miami Open. His celebration, a shushing gesture directed towards the Chilean fans, ignited a chorus of boos from the spectators on Court 1 in Miami Gardens. However, Michelsen remained unfazed.

“It was a great atmosphere. I love it. I love how patriotic the Chileans are for their own. I think it’s amazing. But a couple of people were being disrespectful throughout the match,” Michelsen explained. He firmly believes that facing an opposing crowd brings out the best in his tennis.

“I love when people cheer against me, so it was a lot of fun. Whether I win or lose, I’d say the same thing I always have. It definitely helped me a lot today.”

Miami’s Unique Atmosphere

Michelsen acknowledged the unique atmosphere at the Miami Open, where Latin American players often receive overwhelming support from the local crowd. “It’s part of what makes this tournament great. It’s the city. There are a ton of South Americans around here, and I think the atmosphere for them has been amazing,” he stated.

He recalled a similar experience at the US Open, facing Nicolás Jarry. “I played Nicolás Jarry at the US Open and got a taste of it, so I kind of knew it was coming today. I thought I was very well prepared for it, and I handled it very well.”

Michelsen’s ability to not only withstand but thrive under pressure highlights his mental fortitude and positions him as a player to watch in the world of professional tennis. For more insights into the world of tennis, check out the official ATP Tour website.
