Xavi Espart: A New Name to Remember at Barcelona
La Liga Espart made his first start for Barca in Sunday’s 5-2 win over Sevilla. The story of Xavi Espart is quickly becoming one of the most compelling narratives at FC Barcelona. From a diminutive midfielder to a versatile defender, his journey through La Masia has been nothing short of remarkable.
A Champions League Debut to Remember
The first surprising thing was that it took Newcastle until the 86th minute to finally take the lead in last week’s Champions League round-of-16 first leg at St James’ Park. Barcelona found themselves struggling to control the match, and Harvey Barnes’ strike seemed to seal a victory for the Premier League side. In a moment of need, coach Hansi Flick made an unexpected decision.
Eighteen-year-old Xavi Espart was called upon to replace the exhausted captain, Ronald Araujo, who was out of position for Newcastle’s goal. It was Espart’s first senior appearance, and he seized the opportunity. In just nine minutes, including stoppage time, he showcased his talent with two crucial challenges in the penalty box, including a well-timed slide tackle on Joe Willock, and a determined block to win possession in midfield. His performance ignited Barcelona fans and earned him a memorable debut.
From La Masia to the First Team
Espart’s rise hasn’t been a straight line. He joined Barca’s youth academy at the age of eight in 2015, having previously played for local clubs CE Europa and Vilassar de Mar. Scout Isidre Gil, the same individual who recommended Lamine Yamal, first spotted his potential. While Yamal quickly ascended to the top teams, Espart developed more under the radar.
He was a key figure in the treble-winning season for Barca’s under-19s, securing their domestic league and cup titles, as well as the UEFA Youth League under former player Juliano Belletti. Promoted to Barca Atletic, the club’s reserve team, he continues to excel while also participating in the UEFA Youth League.
A Tactical Intelligence Beyond His Years
Former La Masia youth coach Pau Moral, now with Qatari side Al Rayyan, remembers Espart as a “textbook Barca player.” “He was so intelligent, he understood every concept in seconds and read the game at a faster pace than anyone else. This allows him to play as a right-back. He is so clever that he can play anywhere. Technically, he’s among the best I’ve ever coached, alongside Gavi.”
Initially a holding midfielder, Espart’s versatility was discovered when he was asked to fill in at right-back during an injury crisis. The move proved successful, and he hasn’t looked back since. Hansi Flick has been impressed, noting Espart’s similarities to Philipp Lahm, praising his ability to play as a six or a two, and his performance both on and off the ball.
The Future Looks Bright
While his involvement in the return leg against Newcastle remains uncertain, Espart’s future at Barcelona appears bright. He represents another gem from the exceptionally talented generation of 2007-born players at La Masia, alongside Yamal, Cubarsi, and Marc Bernal. His journey is a testament to his dedication, intelligence, and the strength of Barcelona’s youth system. Read more at The Athletic
