Dillan Bentley: Peoria Native Signs with Laval Rocket, One Step Closer to the NHL

PEORIA – Dillan Bentley’s hockey dreams took a significant leap forward Thursday with the signing of a two-year, one-way contract with the Laval Rocket of the American Hockey League (AHL). This contract secures Bentley’s position with Laval for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons, guaranteeing his AHL salary regardless of potential assignments to lower professional levels.

The Peoria native could make his professional debut with Laval, the primary farm club of the prestigious Montreal Canadiens, should they invite him for an evaluation this spring. Bentley is poised to become just the third player born in Peoria, or a product of the Peoria Youth Hockey Association (PYHA), to reach the AAA level of professional hockey.

A Rapid Ascent

“Everything kind of happened so fast,” Bentley shared. “They’re currently high in their division, but I haven’t received confirmation on when I’ll be playing. My focus is on continuous improvement and maximizing my potential. Throughout my career, I’ve consistently expanded my skillset, and that experience is invaluable.”

Bentley emphasizes the importance of dedication, stating, “If I take a day off, I truly miss the game. That passion is a key factor in my success.”

Key Stats and Background

The 6-foot-4, 195-pound winger led UMass-Lowell with 14 goals in 33 games during his final season, also serving as an assistant captain. Bentley’s journey began in the Peoria Youth Hockey Association, initially as a house league player.

The Influence of Jean-Guy Trudel

A pivotal figure in Bentley’s development is Jean-Guy Trudel, former head coach of the Peoria Rivermen. Trudel recognized Bentley’s potential early on and encouraged his parents to allow him to pursue travel team hockey. He continued to coach and mentor Bentley throughout his youth, eventually recruiting him to the Peoria Mustangs NA3HL junior team.

“I couldn’t be here without him,” Bentley stated emphatically. “I can’t express enough gratitude for his guidance and support, along with others like Alec Hagaman. Growing up, I played for him and was friends with his son, Tristan. I didn’t fully appreciate Jean-Guy Trudel’s genius then, but now I do. He’s family. I remember visiting their house and being captivated by his collection of memorabilia from his pro days – it ignited a deeper passion for the game.”

Trudel coached Bentley to 30 goals in 46 games in 2019-20, propelling him to the New Mexico Ice Dogs of the NAHL the following season. Four years at UMass-Lowell followed, with Trudel remaining a constant source of support and guidance.

A Rare Achievement

Bentley’s signing marks a rare accomplishment for players from the Peoria area. Few have reached the AAA level or beyond. Notable exceptions include Tage Thompson (currently an NHL star), Ric Olson, and the Kaebel brothers. Bryce Aneloski also reached the AHL.

“I’m so proud of Dillan,” Trudel said. “He’s completely dedicated to growth, a great leader, and works harder than anyone. He perseveres through adversity and loves the game, and he’s being rewarded.”

As Bentley wraps up his college career, he reflects on his journey, emphasizing the importance of playing for the love of the game. He’s now poised to make his mark in the AHL with the Laval Rocket, continuing his pursuit of a career in the National Hockey League.
