Larry David to Tackle American History with a Hilarious Twist
Breaking news for comedy fans! Barack Obama is venturing into the delightfully uncomfortable world of Larry David, appearing in David’s upcoming HBO sketch series. But even a former president couldn’t escape David’s signature assertiveness. “I’m president here,” David quipped, recalling a moment when Obama offered a suggestion on one of his sketches. This anecdote, and many more details about the project, were revealed during a recent SXSW talk in Austin alongside his longtime collaborator, director Jeff Schaffer.
‘Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness’: A Satirical Journey Through US History
The seven-episode series, titled Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America, is set to premiere on June 26th. The show promises a satirical take on U.S. history, cleverly timed to celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary. A sneak peek shown at SXSW showcased the show’s unique brand of historical absurdity.
The clip featured David witnessing the iconic “V-J Day in Times Square” moment – the famous photograph of a sailor kissing a stranger celebrating the end of World War II. Expect the same improvisational style that made Curb Your Enthusiasm a hit. Schaffer succinctly described the new series as “‘Curb’ in costume.”
Obama Joins the Fun (and Gets Teased!)
Obama’s production company, Higher Ground, is also producing the series, and the former president will appear alongside David in one of the sketches. Schaffer revealed that Obama didn’t shy away from playfully teasing the famously prickly comedian. “He was ragging on [David’s] golf game, ragging on how much sunscreen [he] wears,” Schaffer shared.
A Star-Studded Cast Brings History to Life
The series boasts an impressive roster of guest stars. Each episode will feature approximately four sketches with a rotating cast, including Curb Your Enthusiasm regulars Jeff Garlin, J.B. Smoove, and Susie Essman, who will portray women’s rights pioneer Susan B. Anthony.
Other notable guest appearances include:
- Bill Hader and Kathryn Hahn as Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln
- Jon Hamm and Sean Hayes as the Wright brothers
These talented actors will inhabit some of the most famous moments in American history, with Larry David inevitably at the center of the awkwardness. In short, prepare for American history… Larry David-style.
