Redmond O’Neal: A Decade After a Violent Crime Spree, Faces Court Again

After nearly a decade out of the public eye following allegations of a brutal crime spree across Los Angeles, Redmond O’Neal, the only son of iconic actors Ryan O’Neal and Farrah Fawcett, has finally appeared in court. Deemed mentally competent to stand trial, the 41-year-old’s recent court appearance revealed a stark change in appearance from his arrest in 2018.

O’Neal appeared significantly heavier than when he was initially detained, when he was gaunt and visibly struggling with drug addiction. Adding to his altered appearance, he now sports new tattoos, including devil horns on his forehead, alongside a pre-existing face tattoo signifying he is a ‘danger to others.’ A new tattoo on his left hand bluntly reads, ‘F*** life.’

Details of the Alleged Crimes

The preliminary hearing unveiled graphic details of the alleged attacks. O’Neal is accused of randomly attacking a gay actor, assaulting him with a glass bottle and inflicting severe injuries requiring facial reconstruction surgery. The victim testified he is now unable to work due to the trauma sustained.

He also faces charges for allegedly stabbing another actor multiple times in the head and body, causing a traumatic brain injury. This victim now suffers from epilepsy as a result of the attack. The charges against O’Neal include one count of felony attempted murder, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and second-degree robbery related to an alleged incident at a 7-Eleven convenience store. A conviction on the attempted murder charge could result in a life sentence.

A Troubled Past and Mental Health Struggles

Redmond O’Neal’s struggles with addiction and mental health have been long-documented. Diagnosed with schizophrenia, alcohol abuse, and substance abuse (meth and cocaine) in 2017, his legal case was initially paused in 2019 when a judge determined he was unable to assist in his own defense. He has since been held in various state prisons and, for the past three and a half years, at Patton State Hospital, a psychiatric facility.

His godmother, Mela Murphy, Fawcett’s former hairdresser and a close friend, now serves as his court-appointed conservator. She reports that O’Neal has been “doing better” at Patton State Hospital and expresses hope for a settlement that would allow him to be released under strict supervision.

“If you look at him now and you speak to him now, he has his mother’s personality,” Murphy shared. “He has his mother’s kindness, her goodness. He tells me, ‘Please don’t cry Mela, don’t worry. It will be fine. God will take us in the right direction.’ He found God in Patton State hospital. The medication is working beautifully and he’s going to his life skills classes everyday.”

Victim Testimony and Ongoing Legal Proceedings

During the hearing, Kenneth Fox, one of the alleged victims, testified about the brutal attack, recounting how O’Neal allegedly struck him in the face with a glass bottle while uttering homophobic slurs. Fox described the lasting physical and emotional trauma he has endured, including facial disfigurement and an inability to return to acting. He also questioned why police reports omitted the homophobic slurs used during the attack.

Another alleged victim, Seth Folkerson, testified that he has limited memory of the attack due to the severity of his injuries, which included a slit throat and multiple stab wounds. He also suffers from a traumatic brain injury and epilepsy as a result.

The judge has ordered O’Neal to return to court next month to determine if there is sufficient evidence to proceed with criminal charges. His life has been marked by a long struggle with addiction and mental health, a battle his mother, Farrah Fawcett, tirelessly fought alongside him for years.

A Legacy of Loss

Both of O’Neal’s parents have passed away. Farrah Fawcett died in 2009 after a battle with anal cancer, and Ryan O’Neal passed away in 2023 from congestive heart failure. In a 2018 interview, O’Neal blamed his father for his struggles, alleging emotional trauma and abandonment.

Redmond O’Neal’s case continues to unfold, highlighting the devastating consequences of addiction, mental illness, and the long shadow cast by a Hollywood legacy.
