Avista and Spokane Prepare for Severe Wind Storm
SPOKANE, Wash. – The City of Spokane has activated its inclement weather plan in anticipation of a significant wind storm expected to bring gusts of 50-65 miles per hour. The storm is forecast to impact the region Wednesday night and continue through Thursday morning, posing risks of tree damage, power outages, and hazardous driving conditions. Avista is actively preparing alongside city officials to minimize disruption and ensure public safety.
City and Avista’s Preparations
City of Spokane first responders and Street & Parks crews are mobilizing to address potential damage and assist residents. Local shelters are increasing capacity to support individuals experiencing homelessness. Bed availability information can be found on the Shelter Me Spokane website. Avista is also taking proactive steps, including fully stocking fleet vehicles and warehouse supplies to expedite restoration efforts.
Safety Precautions for Residents
Public safety officials strongly advise residents to remain indoors during the storm. If travel is unavoidable, exercise extreme caution. Here’s a comprehensive checklist to help you prepare:
- Stay Informed: Monitor local news and weather updates for the latest information.
- Secure Property: Bring loose outdoor items inside (furniture, trash cans, decorations).
- Power Outage Preparedness: Turn off and unplug appliances and electronics to prevent damage from power surges. Leave one light or radio on to indicate when power is restored.
- Generator Safety: If using a generator, operate it outside to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Never connect a generator directly to your home’s electrical system.
- Porch Lights On: Keep front porch lights illuminated to assist Avista crews in identifying areas with and without power.
Reporting Outages and Downed Lines
Reporting downed trees and blocked roadways: Call 311.
Downed power lines: Immediately contact Avista at 1-800-277-9187. Never approach downed power lines – they are extremely dangerous. Call 911 if you witness a downed power line.
Traffic Signals: Treat any non-functioning traffic lights as four-way stops.
Restoration Times and Debris Removal
Due to the anticipated severity of the storm, Avista anticipates that estimated power restoration times will not be available until after the storm has passed. Crews will prioritize opening major roadways before addressing residential streets and clearing debris. City park safety will be assessed by park crews.
After the storm, residents can dispose of yard debris at the Waste to Energy Facility located at 2900 S. Geiger Blvd. For assistance with tree debris removal from private property, refer to the City of Spokane’s list of licensed arborists.
“Spokane is no stranger to high winds, but we ask that everyone take the necessary precautions to ensure we get through this safely. Stay inside, secure loose items, and pay attention to changing conditions,” said Mayor Lisa Brown. “Our first responders, street crews, and 311 teams are standing by and ready to respond to potential damage.”
Stay safe, Spokane!
