One Piece Cast on the Soundtrack to Adventure: What Would Luffy & Sanji Listen To?
Monkey D. Luffy—or simply Luffy—from One Piece wouldn’t be caught listening to reggaeton or melancholic tunes. In an exclusive interview with Remezcla, stars of Netflix’s live-action One Piece, Mexican actor Iñaki Godoy (Luffy) and Spanish-British actor Taz Skylar (Sanji), revealed their insights into the musical tastes of their characters. Prepare for a spoiler alert: Godoy’s choices might surprise you, diverging from the current Latin music sensations and even Mexico’s most beloved ballad singers.
Promoting One Piece Around the Globe
Godoy and Skylar are currently enjoying a whirlwind of promotional activities for the upcoming season of One Piece. Last month, Godoy stepped into the ring for a Mexican lucha libre match and spent a day immersed in One Piece-themed fun with fans in Mexico City. Just last week (March 6th), both actors participated in the 2026 World Baseball Classic in Japan, with Godoy even taking the pitcher’s mound as part of the series’ promotion alongside the rest of the cast. Beyond these unique events, they’ve also been engaging in traditional press junkets, offering fans a deeper understanding of Luffy and Sanji from the actors’ perspectives.
Remezcla had the opportunity to join the One Piece universe at Netflix’s studios in Hollywood, CA, on February 26th. We dove deeper into Luffy’s whimsical mind, asking Godoy which Latin artist his character would gravitate towards.
Luffy’s Playlist: Mariachi Over Modern Hits?
Godoy responded, “I think Luffy would vibe with mariachis and stuff like that, I guess because he likes the instruments and the sounds of it. I don’t think he would like stuff like José José because it’s too sad for him. I think he would like the uplifting music about partying.”
Skylar quickly interjected, suggesting Luffy would be “jamming” to Bad Bunny. Godoy playfully countered, “Bad Bunny? Uhhh, you think that? I think he’s more into ‘El mariachi loco quiere bailar,’ or like ‘Ya llego Sergio el Bailador,’ like wedding music—I think that’s what Luffy likes. Like whatever they play at weddings, like when they’re dancing to like the cumbias and all that stuff.”
Sanji’s Tropical Vibes: A Salsa Soundtrack
The conversation then turned to Sanji’s musical preferences. Skylar believes his character would be drawn to the sounds of Cuban salsa musician Fresto. He even played “Me Hace Daño Verte,” showcasing the tropical vibe that perfectly suits Sanji’s character. “¡Un temazo! [What a song!],” he exclaimed.
