Detroit Lions Free Agency: A New Era Begins
The Detroit Lions are entering a crucial free agency period, kicking off Monday at noon ET with the opening of the league’s negotiating window. General Manager Brad Holmes has a prime opportunity to revamp the roster for the 2026 season. While official signings can’t occur until Wednesday afternoon, the groundwork is being laid now.
Early Moves and Key Departures
The Lions have already made a significant move, agreeing to a three-year, $25 million deal with former Carolina Panthers center Cade Mays. This addition addresses a key need on the offensive line. However, the Lions have also seen some departures. Veteran Taylor Decker requested and was granted his release after declining a pay cut, marking the end of an era for the team’s longest-tenured player.
Linebacker Alex Anzalone is heading to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a two-year, $17 million deal, ending his five-year tenure in Detroit. Defensive back Amik Robertson has also found a new home with the Washington Commanders, agreeing to a two-year, $16 million contract.
Impactful Signings Around the League
The free agency market is moving quickly. Former Baltimore Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum has become the highest-paid interior offensive lineman in NFL history, signing a three-year, $81 million deal with the Las Vegas Raiders. Other notable signings include:
- Kenneth Gainwell (RB) – Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2 years, $14 million)
- Kingsley Enagbare (DE) – New York Jets (1 year, $10 million)
- Joseph Ossai (Pass Rusher) – New York Jets (3 years, $36 million)
- Jaelan Phillips (Edge Rusher) – Carolina Panthers (4 years, $120 million)
- Kenneth Walker III (RB) – Kansas City Chiefs
Lions’ Remaining Needs and Strategy
The Lions’ primary focus this offseason is strengthening both the offensive and defensive lines. Despite a tight salary cap, Holmes isn’t ruling out the possibility of pursuing a top-tier player. Award-winning Lions reporter Dave Birkett has outlined a five-step plan to maximize the Lions’ impact in free agency. Read Birkett’s plan here.
Trade Alert: Packers Send Rashan Gary to Cowboys
In a surprising move, the Green Bay Packers have traded defensive end Rashan Gary to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2027 fourth-round pick. Gary, a Pro Bowler in 2024, adds significant pass-rushing ability to the Cowboys’ defense.
