Perron Returns to Detroit: A Familiar Face Back in the Motor City
David Perron’s NHL journey takes him back to familiar ice. The veteran forward has been traded from the Ottawa Senators to the Detroit Red Wings, announced Thursday evening. In exchange, the Senators receive a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft. This pick has the potential to become a third-round selection if the Red Wings advance to the second round of the playoffs and Perron plays at least 50% of the games in the first round.
A Red Wings Veteran Returns
This isn’t Perron’s first stint in Detroit. He previously played two seasons with the Red Wings from 2022 to 2024, amassing an impressive 41 goals and 103 points in 158 games. Fans will be eager to see if he can recapture that form. This season, with Ottawa, Perron has recorded 10 goals and 15 assists in 49 games.
Perron, in the final year of a two-year, $4 million contract, brings a wealth of experience to the Red Wings, boasting 1223 career NHL games. Throughout his career, he’s suited up for the St. Louis Blues, Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks, Vegas Golden Knights, Detroit Red Wings, and now, once again, the Red Wings and the Ottawa Senators. He has a career total of 329 goals and 809 points. A proven playoff performer, Perron has participated in 110 NHL playoff games, including a Stanley Cup victory in 2019.
Senators Acquire Warren Foegele
In a separate move, the Senators bolstered their roster earlier in the day by acquiring forward Warren Foegele from the Los Angeles Kings. Ottawa also receives a third-round pick in the 2026 draft, while sending a second-round pick (2026) and a third-round pick (2026) to Los Angeles. All picks involved in the trade are conditional.
Foegele is in the second year of a three-year contract with an average annual value of $3.5 million. While facing a challenging offensive season with seven goals and two assists in 47 games, he previously reached the 40-point mark in each of the last two seasons. The 6’2” forward has 86 playoff games under his belt, including a run to the Stanley Cup Final with the Edmonton Oilers in 2024 before joining the Kings as a free agent.
Originally a third-round pick by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2014, Foegele has tallied 111 goals and 218 points in 560 NHL games.
