Song Sung Blue Movie: A Nostalgic Journey Through Neil Diamond’s Music

A Trip Down Memory Lane with ‘Song Sung Blue’

Recently, I had the pleasure of revisiting a film that stirred up a wave of nostalgia: “Song Sung Blue.” It wasn’t a trip to a Neil Diamond biopic, as some might expect. Instead, the movie beautifully portrays the story of Mike and Claire Sardinia, a Wisconsin couple who captivated audiences as a Neil Diamond tribute act known as Lightning & Thunder. It’s a heartwarming tale brought to life with stellar performances.

Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson Shine

Hugh Jackman delivers a solid performance as Mike, but it’s Kate Hudson who truly steals the show. Her portrayal of Claire is nothing short of fantastic, and her Oscar nomination was well-deserved. Hudson’s vocal talent is breathtaking; she effortlessly elevates every song she sings. Overall, I’d give the film a solid B+. While a bit melodramatic – compressing twelve years into a two-hour runtime inevitably leads to some rushed moments – the emotional core remains strong.

The Soundtrack: An A+

The soundtrack, however, is a masterpiece. While Jackman doesn’t perfectly replicate Neil Diamond’s unique voice, he infuses the 1970s tunes with energy and enthusiasm. Hudson’s vocals, whether harmonizing or taking the lead, are simply stunning. But more than just the performances, the film rekindled my lifelong appreciation for Neil Diamond’s music.

A Lifelong Connection to Neil Diamond

My first encounter with Neil Diamond’s music came in 1967, when my brother Johnny brought home the 45 of “Thank the Lord for the Nighttime.” That simple record sparked a 50+ year love affair with his songs. Watching “Song Sung Blue” prompted me to reflect on my personal Top 10 Neil Diamond favorites – a list that, admittedly, could change tomorrow!
