Miles Caton Joins Blues Legend Buddy Guy on NPR’s Tiny Desk
Chicago blues icon Buddy Guy, nearing his 90th birthday, continues to prove his enduring talent and vibrant spirit. Fresh off his ninth Grammy win and the announcement of a celebratory North American tour, Guy recently captivated audiences with his debut performance on NPR’s renowned Tiny Desk Concert series.
The 21-minute set featured a selection of career-spanning hits, including his 1991 classic “Damn Right, I’ve Got the Blues” and the timeless 1970 tune “Hoochie Coochie Man.” But the performance held a special surprise for fans: a collaboration with musician and actor, Miles Caton.
A Dynamic Duo: Caton and Guy on Stage
Around the nine-minute mark, Miles Caton joined Buddy Guy, creating a dynamic duo that electrified the intimate Tiny Desk setting. Together, they performed “Travelin’” and “I Lied to You” from the critically acclaimed soundtrack of the 16-time Oscar-nominated film, “Sinners.” Both Guy and Caton contributed to the film’s soundtrack and made appearances in the movie itself.
NPR’s YouTube description perfectly captures the energy of the performance: “Buddy Guy displays a youthful spirit during his Tiny Desk that makes you question if he really turns 90 this year. Once the music starts, his subtle speaking voice transforms into a mighty instrument, demanding your attention… But what kind of blues show would this be if they stuck to the script? Guy takes detours into the history of the blues, playfully challenging Caton to keep up.”
The performance was further enriched by the talents of Dan Souvigney on piano, Ric Hall on guitar, Orlando Wright on bass, and Pooky Styx on drums.
