Shrewsbury Town’s Winning Streak: Can They Maintain the Momentum?

Shrewsbury Town head coach Gavin Cowan has acknowledged the increased expectations surrounding the club following their impressive run of form in League Two. A recent surge of five consecutive victories has dramatically shifted the narrative at the club, pulling them clear of the relegation zone that loomed large when Cowan took the helm at the end of January.

A Dramatic Turnaround

Salop’s transformation under Cowan has been nothing short of remarkable. From being just two points above relegation in 22nd place, they’ve climbed to 17th, establishing a comfortable 12-point cushion over the drop zone. Wins against Barrow, Swindon Town, Notts County, Accrington, and Salford City have been the cornerstone of this success.

Speaking to BBC Radio Shropshire, Cowan emphasized the positive impact on player confidence. “Yeah, really good, and obviously we want to try and prolong that for as long as we can,” he stated. “The lads are really buoyant, it’s a stark contrast to when we came in four weeks ago. I’m just really pleased that we’ve managed to drive the energy of the club and the supporters.”

Strategic Approach and Player Commitment

Cowan attributes the team’s success to a strategic approach and the players’ dedication to implementing it. “It was definitely the hope, but we try to play quite strategic and make everything by design, and the lads have implemented it really well,” he explained. He also acknowledged the external pressure that comes with success, stating, “I understand people now, from four weeks ago, have a higher expectation because of what we’ve achieved, but ultimately we have to go and do it.”

The coach is keen to keep the team grounded, focusing on each game as it comes. “We don’t get too carried away with what’s happened, and we’re not looking too far in the future. We just want to be the best version of ourselves against a big team like Walsall.”

New Goalkeeper Coach Appointed

In other news, Shrewsbury Town has appointed Harry Burgoyne as their new goalkeeper coach. Burgoyne, 29, is a familiar face at the club, having played for Salop between January 2020 and July 2024, making 39 appearances. He has signed a deal until the end of the season, following a short coaching stint by former England and Salop keeper Joe Hart, who worked with Matt Cox and Will Brook.

This appointment adds further stability to the coaching staff as Shrewsbury Town prepares for a challenging fixture against Walsall. The question remains: can they maintain this incredible momentum and continue their climb up the League Two table?
