LeAnn Rimes: A Journey of Transformation
LeAnn Rimes is looking back at a pivotal moment in her career – her appearance in the 2000 film Coyote Ugly. For the singer, it wasn’t just a cameo; it was a turning point that marked a shift from her “America’s Sweetheart” image to embracing her sexuality. Rimes first captivated audiences at the young age of 13 in 1996 with the release of her hit song, “Blue.”
The ‘Coyote Ugly’ Moment
At just 17, Rimes filmed a memorable cameo in Coyote Ugly, performing a duet of the film’s theme song, “Can’t Fight the Moonlight,” with Piper Perabo. The scene, featuring Rimes in a daring low-cut, backless crop top and snakeskin leather pants while dancing on the bar, became iconic. During a recent appearance on Good Morning America, Rimes recalled this moment as her “introduction to sexiness and sex sells.”
“I mean really, I was ‘America’s Sweetheart’ until they put me on a bar, and then it was all over,” she joked. “So I mean I was just like, ‘What do I do?’ I know what to do now on a bar but back then that was just really good editing.”
The Impact of a Scene
Coyote Ugly follows Violet Sanford, an aspiring songwriter who finds herself working at a lively bar where the bartenders, known as “Coyotes,” dance on the counter to energize the crowd. The film became a box office success, grossing $113 million worldwide and achieving cult classic status. “Can’t Fight the Moonlight,” penned by Diane Warren and performed by Rimes, peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Recreating the Magic
Recently, Rimes revisited the magic of Coyote Ugly, recreating the famous final scene at the Coyote Ugly Saloon Nashville. She shared a video on Instagram featuring a duet of “Can’t Fight the Moonlight” with Piper Perabo and her 9-1-1 Nashville castmates – Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Jessica Capshaw, Mackenzie Porter, Hailey Kilgore, and Juani Feliz.
“Nashville, do we serve water in this bar…,” Rimes captioned the post, referencing a memorable line from the movie. She also expressed her gratitude to the Coyote Ugly Saloon Nashville and the “bada– ladies” who taught them some moves.
Behind the Scenes & Lasting Legacy
Rimes also shared a humorous anecdote about the filming of the scene, revealing she wore chicken cutlets in her top! “The chicken cutlets that they had me put in my top. There you go,” she told Entertainment Tonight in 2018. “I’m 17. My mom was very happy that was the only bar I was dancing on.”
Despite not being a major hit in the US initially, “Can’t Fight the Moonlight” became an international sensation, reaching number one in 11 countries and eventually cracking the top 20 in the States. Rimes reflected on the song’s unexpected success, stating, “It’s weird how the universe works… You just never know what’s gonna hit.”
LeAnn Rimes’ journey from a young country star to a confident performer is a testament to her evolution as an artist and a woman. Coyote Ugly remains a significant moment in her career, symbolizing a turning point and a lasting legacy.
