Andora: Celebrating Life, Tradition, and Youth
Andora, a charming coastal town in Liguria, Italy, recently celebrated a remarkable milestone – the 100th birthday of resident Salvatore La Franca. This joyous occasion highlights the strong sense of community and the appreciation for a life well-lived that defines Andora.
Growing Network of Olive Oil Cities
The Ligurian region continues to strengthen its commitment to olive oil production and preservation. Currently, 38 municipalities in Liguria are now part of the ‘Città dell’Olio’ (Olive Oil Cities) network, with Testico, Stellanello, Toirano, and Vendone being the latest additions. This network is dedicated to protecting and promoting the region’s rich olive oil heritage.
Enrico Lupi was honored with the title of Honorary President of the ‘Città dell’Olio’, recognizing his significant contributions to the association. This acknowledgment underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in preserving the landscape and promoting the economic value of olive cultivation.
A New Generation Takes the Lead
Andora is also investing in its future, as demonstrated by the recent election of a new youth council. Camilla Caruso (3A) was elected Mayor, and Gabriel Paonessa (1C) was chosen as Vice Mayor. This initiative, established in 2017, encourages civic participation among students at the Benedetto Croce Institute.
Mayor Mauro Demichelis expressed his heartfelt wishes to Salvatore La Franca and emphasized the importance of giving young people a voice in local governance. He stated, “The Youth Council represents an important opportunity for civic growth for students: it encourages them to get to know the local institutions and to actively participate in the life of the Municipality.”
The Importance of the ‘Città dell’Olio’ Network
The ‘Città dell’Olio’ network plays a crucial role in safeguarding the Ligurian landscape and promoting sustainable development. As Michele Sonnessa, National President of the network, explained, “In Liguria, the olive tree is not just a crop: it is an environmental infrastructure, an element of hydrogeological balance and a deep identity sign of the local communities.”
The addition of Testico, Stellanello, Vendone, and Toirano enriches the network with diverse communities deeply connected to the olive and the Ligurian landscape. Each town brings unique traditions and practices to the table, contributing to the overall strength and resilience of the network.
- Testico: Known for its traditional terraced olive groves.
- Stellanello: A town where olive cultivation is vital for landscape conservation.
- Vendone: A historic agricultural center with a strong olive-growing tradition.
- Toirano: A community dedicated to preserving its olive heritage.
The ‘Città dell’Olio’ network currently comprises over 540 municipalities and public entities committed to promoting olive oil culture, preserving Italy’s olive heritage, combating land abandonment, and developing olive tourism. Learn more about the Città dell’Olio network.
