Jacob Tierney and the ‘Heated Rivalry’ Tourism Boom in Canada
The landscape of Canadian tourism is undergoing a significant shift, and it’s all thanks to the captivating series, ‘Heated Rivalry,’ featuring the talented Jacob Tierney. Since the show’s steamy scenes aired, bookings for Canadian cottages have surged by an impressive 110%, rewriting the narrative of summer in Muskoka and beyond for 2026.
A Canadian Idyll on Screen
Imagine the scene: birdsong fills the air as Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov journey through the dense boreal forests and pristine lakes of the Canadian Shield. The show beautifully captures the essence of Canadian cottage country, showcasing relaxing retreats surrounded by lush conifers and the gentle chirp of crickets. From barbecued burgers and friendly footy kick-abouts to intimate moments by the crystalline lake, ‘Heated Rivalry’ paints a picture of idyllic escape.
The ‘Heated Rivalry’ Effect: A Surge in Bookings
Adapted from Canadian author Rachel Reid’s ‘Game Changer’ novels, ‘Heated Rivalry’ is set primarily in Ontario and Quebec, and its breathtaking backdrops are proving to be a powerful draw for tourists. Immediately following the season one finale on December 26th, searches for cottages in the Muskoka District, a two-hour drive north of Toronto, jumped by over 110%. Val Hamilton, Executive Director of Muskoka Tourism, reports that bookings for the region are skyrocketing, even during traditionally quieter months like January and February. “We’re expecting a really strong 2026,” she states.
Authentic Canada: A Key Appeal
The appeal isn’t solely international. A significant portion of the increased interest is coming from Canadians themselves, who appreciate seeing their country portrayed authentically, rather than as a substitute for another location. Wayne Smith, Director of the Institute for Hospitality and Tourism Research at Toronto Metropolitan University, notes, “It is nice to see a true Canada depicted on the screen.” Canada often finds itself overshadowed by its southern neighbour, making this authentic representation particularly valuable.
International Interest Grows
However, the show’s influence extends beyond Canadian borders. Approximately 15% of new bookings originate from the US and other countries, inspired by the on-screen romance and stunning scenery. “The moment where Ilya and Shane are sitting and watching the sunrise together is one of my favourite moments,” shares Stacy Simmons, an American fan, who is planning a trip to Canada with friends, hoping to coincide it with a hockey game.
Muskoka Embraces the ‘Cottage’ Craze
Muskoka Tourism has capitalized on the show’s popularity with a “Come to the Cottage” campaign, featuring billboards across Toronto. While the specific cottage featured in the show, the Barlochan Cottage, isn’t available for rent, numerous options are available through Unique Stays, CottageRental.com, and Ontario Cottage Rentals (OCR). Renowned for its rocky shores and over 1,600 sparkling lakes, Muskoka truly lives up to its nickname: “cottage country paradise.”
Beyond Muskoka: Exploring Filming Locations
The impact isn’t limited to Muskoka. Locations in Toronto and Montreal, featured in the series, are also attracting fans. Le Tambour Tavern, where a pivotal breakup scene occurred, and St-Viateur Bagel, whose logo appeared on a character’s t-shirt (leading to a sales surge), are now popular destinations. Even Hamilton, an hour from Toronto, has launched a location guide on its tourism blog to highlight filming spots, including the iconic pink tunnel and Relay Coffee Roasters (formerly Straw+Berry smoothie shop), which has created ‘Heated Rivalry’-themed drinks.
Planning Your Canadian Escape
Whether you’re drawn by the romance, the scenery, or the hockey, Canada offers a wealth of experiences. Consider these options:
- Accommodation: Explore lakefront cottages and cabins through Unique Stays, CottageRental.com, and OCR.
- Activities: Enjoy skiing at Deerhurst Resort, swimming and boating on Lake Muskoka and Lake Joseph, or hiking amidst the colourful autumn foliage.
- Dining: Savor dockside views at Jack & Stella, cozy comfort food at Cast Iron Restaurant, and local brews at Sawdust City Brewing Co.
As fans eagerly await the second season, slated for 2027, a visit to these filming locations offers a chance to relive the magic of ‘Heated Rivalry’ and experience the beauty of the Great White North firsthand.
Note: For visitors unfamiliar with Canadian terminology, a “cottage” refers to a holiday home – often a second or rented residence in a rural or lakefront area.
