Rockstar Games AI Head Laid Off Amidst Take-Two Restructuring

The gaming world is buzzing with news of significant changes at Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games and Zynga. Luke Dicken, formerly the head of AI for Take-Two, announced via LinkedIn that his position, along with those of his team, has been eliminated. This news comes as the company navigates shifting priorities and explores the integration of artificial intelligence into game development.

Dicken’s post, shared yesterday, expressed his disappointment, stating, “It’s truly disappointing that I have to share with you that my time with T2—and that of my team—has come to an end.” Take-Two declined to comment when contacted for confirmation. Dicken plans to share a more detailed reflection on his time at Zynga and Take-Two in the coming week, but immediately focused on assisting his former team members in finding new opportunities.

A Team Focused on Cutting-Edge Technology

Dicken highlighted the team’s seven years of experience developing cutting-edge technology for game development. “We’ve been developing cutting edge technology to support game development now for 7 years. These folks know how to match innovation and novel problem solving approaches with strong product design chops to create systems that empower people throughout the development workflow,” he wrote. Several other individuals, including the director of AI research, a senior manager in SRE, and two senior data scientists, have also posted similar announcements regarding their layoffs.

Generative AI and Take-Two’s Strategy

This restructuring occurs amidst Take-Two’s exploration of generative AI. During a recent investor call, President Karl Slatoff cautioned against comparing Google’s AI tool Genie to traditional game engines. However, the company has publicly stated its support for generative AI tools, aiming to leverage them for increased efficiency and cost reduction. This stance is somewhat controversial, as many developers have expressed concerns about the potential negative impact of genAI on the industry.

CEO Strauss Zelnick emphasized that generative AI aligns with Take-Two’s core strategy: “be the most creative, be the most innovative and be the most efficient company in the entertainment business.” He believes generative AI is already contributing to innovation and efficiency within the company.

Strong Financial Performance Amidst Changes

Despite these layoffs, Take-Two reported a strong financial quarter, with net bookings reaching $1.76 billion. Zynga, particularly the mobile title Toon Blast, played a significant role in this success, growing by 43% year-over-year and exceeding $3 billion in lifetime net bookings.

Looking ahead, Take-Two is highly optimistic about the future, particularly with the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI in November 2026, and the launch of its marketing campaign this summer. The company anticipates a groundbreaking year for both itself and the entertainment industry as a whole.
