Riot Unleashed: A New Era of Strategic Depth
The Jungle is a living, breathing force in Riot’s latest set, Unleashed. It’s a realm that rewards patience, tests resolve, and favors those who move with calculated precision. This set centers around the idea of hidden strength and patient transformation, embodied by champions like Master Yi, Diana, Vi, and Pyke. These aren’t heroes who burst onto the scene fully formed; they’ve honed their power in the shadows, emerging as formidable forces through dedication and strategic growth.
The Power of Becoming: Introducing the XP Mechanic
Unleashed isn’t just about powerful champions; it’s about becoming powerful. Champions evolve, adapt, and strike when the moment is perfect. To reflect this, a brand new XP mechanic has been introduced. Every XP token earned, every monster defeated, and every strategic advantage gained brings you closer to dominance.
Let’s take Kha’Zix, Voidreaver, as an example. This Champion Legend allows you to gain 1 XP for each combat won. This XP can then be spent to buff units or even reposition exhausted allies. But the benefits don’t stop there. Each XP token also contributes to leveling up your cards, unlocking unique abilities and enhancing their effectiveness.
Leveling Up Your Cards
Cards with a “Level” benefit gain unique advantages as you accumulate XP. Consider Master Yi, Unstoppable. At 3 XP (Level 3), he costs less Energy and Power to play. This cost reduction continues at Levels 6 and 11, and at Level 16, he becomes immune to enemy spells and abilities. This demonstrates how XP isn’t just a resource; it’s a pathway to unlocking a champion’s full potential.
Harnessing the Jungle: Hunt and Ambush
The Jungle’s core skill – striking from concealment – is brought to life in Riftbound with the new Hunt and Ambush mechanics. Hunt allows you to gain XP when a unit conquers or holds a battlefield. For example, the Mosstompter grants 2 XP when it conquers or holds.
Ambush lets you play a unit as a reaction to a contested battlefield where you already have units present. Inferna, with her Assault 2 ability, is a prime example of a champion who can make a significant impact with a well-timed Ambush.
New Tokens to Enhance Your Strategy
Unleashed introduces a wealth of new tokens to diversify your strategies:
- Baron Nashor Token: Appears when Baron Nashor is played.
- Brush Token: Replaces battlefields when you play Ivern, Green Father.
- Might Token: Grants a unit +1 Might.
- Gold Token: Provides 1 Power when exhausted and killed.
- Copy Token: Temporarily becomes a copy of another card in play.
