Pokémon Champions: A New Era of Competitive Play Has Begun

Pokémon Champions is ushering in a new era of competitive Pokémon battles on Nintendo Switch, launching today, April 8th. This innovative battle simulator is poised to become the official platform for competitive play, aiming to make the world of professional Pokémon battling more accessible to newcomers while offering depth for seasoned veterans.

What is Pokémon Champions?

Unlike traditional Pokémon RPGs, Pokémon Champions is a free-to-play battle simulator. It allows players to import Pokémon from other games and construct teams for online battles. The goal is to create an all-encompassing, generation-spanning tool where players can customize rulesets, playstyles, and teams to their heart’s content.

Key Features and Restrictions at Launch

While ambitious, Pokémon Champions will have some limitations at launch. Initially, only fully evolved Pokémon will be available for use, with Pikachu being a notable exception. Battle gimmicks will be rolled out over time, starting with Mega Evolutions. Z-Moves, Dynamax transformations, and other rulesets will be added later.

The game will feature multiple modes, including ranked matches, casual matches, and private matches for playing with friends.

Building Your Dream Team

There are two primary ways to build your team in Pokémon Champions:

  • Recruitment: Use Victory Points (earned in ranked battles) to recruit Pokémon from a rotating daily selection. You can try Pokémon for seven days or recruit them permanently. Quick Coupons can accelerate the rotation.
  • Pokémon Home Integration: Import Pokémon from games like Scarlet and Violet, Pokémon GO, and the Legends series using the Pokémon Home storage app.

Pokémon Home acts as a central storage hub for Pokémon across multiple generations, allowing you to transfer them to compatible games. A free version stores up to 30 Pokémon, while the Premium Plan ($3/month, $5/3 months, $16/year) expands storage to 6,000.

Premium Membership and Battle Passes

Pokémon Champions offers a Premium Membership with increased storage, team creation slots, and exclusive missions and music. A Starter Pack ($7) provides 50 storage slots, 30 Teammate Tickets, and 50 Training Tickets.

Battle Passes (free and premium) will also be available, with some items like Mega Stones and cosmetics locked behind the premium track. This means access to certain Mega Evolutions will require a purchase.

Release Time Details

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company announced that Pokémon Champions launched today, April 8th. However, due to time zones, the exact launch time varies. For players in America, the game is available starting at 11 p.m. Eastern Time, 8 p.m. Pacific Time.

A mobile version of Pokémon Champions is planned for release in 2026, with some reports suggesting a potential launch in June (according to the Korean Pokémon website).
