RuneScape: Dragonwilds Expands into the APAC Region
Jagex, the developer behind the popular RuneScape franchise, has announced a significant expansion into the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region with the launch of RuneScape: Dragonwilds later this year. This move marks the company’s “most significant international expansion” to date, demonstrating a commitment to becoming a truly global gaming franchise.
A Strategic Move into a Key Gaming Market
According to Jagex CEO Jon Bellamy, “APAC is the centre of gravity for the global gaming population, and these are among the most discerning and passionate player communities in the world.” The expansion will include full localization in Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, going beyond simple translation to truly resonate with local players. Bellamy emphasizes that this isn’t merely about language; it’s a statement of intent to build a franchise designed for long-term success – aiming for the next 25 years and beyond.
Building a Global Franchise
Jagex’s ambition extends beyond a single game. The company aims to evolve into a multi-product, community-powered franchise with a global outlook. The APAC region represents a natural progression in this journey. The survival crafting genre, which RuneScape: Dragonwilds embodies, has a strong following in these markets. The game’s unique blend of deep skilling systems, cooperative gameplay, and immersive world-building is expected to appeal to players familiar with similar formats.
Recent Milestones and Future Outlook
RuneScape: Dragonwilds initially entered early access on Steam in April 2025 and subsequently expanded to Latin America in September with Portuguese and Spanish localization. This demonstrates Jagex’s agile approach to international expansion. Earlier this year, Jagex SVP James Dobrowski highlighted 2026 as the company’s biggest, most ambitious, and most challenging year yet, following a period of strategic review and realignment.
Dobrowski noted that the company underwent significant changes in strategy last year, impacting both overall direction and individual product roadmaps. This proactive approach suggests Jagex is well-positioned to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the growing APAC gaming market.
