YouTube TV Gains Momentum as WOW! Ditches Traditional Cable
A significant shift is underway in the television landscape as WOW!, a cable and internet provider primarily serving the Midwest, is actively transitioning its customers to YouTube TV, widely recognized as the best live TV streaming service. This move signals a broader trend of cable companies adapting to the growing popularity of cord-cutting and streaming alternatives.
The Phase-Out of WOW!’s TV Service
The phase-out of WOW!’s proprietary live TV service began in 2023, as reported by CordCutterNews, and is now reaching its final stages. Traditional TV subscribers are being encouraged to opt for one of WOW!’s YouTube TV bundles, offering the service at a discounted rate of $10 per month for the first year. Existing customers will be automatically migrated to YouTube TV as the WOW! service officially shuts down in April.
Furthermore, WOW! is also discontinuing its streaming TV service, which was initially designed to compete with established players like Fubo and Sling TV. Now, any new TV service subscription through WOW! will exclusively provide access to YouTube TV.
Transition Timeline and Affected Areas
For those currently subscribed to WOW! TV+, the transition to YouTube TV is already in progress and is expected to be completed by June 30, 2026. Legacy WOW! TV customers utilizing traditional cable services will also be gradually transitioned to YouTube TV, although the exact timeline may vary depending on their location.
WOW! serves a substantial area encompassing much of the Midwest – including Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio – as well as select metropolitan areas in Alabama, South Carolina, and Florida’s panhandle.
A Growing Trend in the TV Industry
This development reflects a larger industry trend of cable providers forging partnerships with streaming services. Last year, Charter began incorporating streamers into its TV bundles, and recently, TV networks and streaming platforms have started collaborating to offer previously unavailable services. As more consumers cut the cord, providers are seeking innovative ways to retain customers, even if it means offering discounts or phasing out their own products.
