
SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket Hits the Moon: What NASA Reveals About the Impact
In a dramatic cosmic collision, a four-tonne discarded piece of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is believed to have slammed into the lunar surface this past Wednesday. Traveling at a staggering speed of 5,400 miles per hour, the impact has sparked discussions among astronomers and space agencies worldwide regarding the sustainability of orbital debris.
While the collision poses absolutely no threat to Earth, it has created a unique scientific opportunity for researchers to study the effects of artificial impacts on the moon.
The Anatomy of the Collision
The object, roughly the size of a small building, was part of a Falcon 9 rocket that launched a lunar lander for Firefly Aerospace in January 2025. Unlike typical rocket stages that re-enter Earth’s atmosphere and burn up or land in the ocean, this particular stage remained in space due to the high thrust required for the lunar mission.
According to reports, the impact occurred around 6:35 am BST. While the collision likely kicked up a massive plume of lunar dust, it remained nearly invisible to the naked eye from Earth, leaving professional and amateur astronomers to scramble for confirmation using high-powered telescopes.
NASA’s Scientific Take: A New Lunar Crater
NASA has confirmed that the impact was expected to carve out a new crater approximately 60 feet (18 metres) wide and 12 feet (four metres) deep. Rather than seeing this as a mere accident, NASA scientists are treating it as a data-gathering event.
Jimi Russell, a spokesperson for NASA, stated that the agency intends to image the site to better understand “artificial impacts and their exploration implications.” By analyzing the ejecta—the dust and rock thrown outward during the crash—scientists can refine their techniques for tracking uncontrolled objects in deep space.
The Growing Concern of ‘Space Junk’
This incident highlights a pressing issue in modern aerospace: the accumulation of space debris. Julianna Scheiman, SpaceX’s director of NASA science and Dragon programmes, explained that a combination of gravity forces and solar activity nudged the uncontrolled rocket stage onto a trajectory toward the moon.
