Breaking the Sky: The Ascent of the Kingdom Tower

The architectural landscape of the world is about to change forever. The Kingdom Tower (widely known as the JEC Tower or Jeddah Tower) is rapidly progressing toward its goal of becoming the tallest man-made structure on Earth. Currently, this engineering titan has reached a height of 430 metres (1,410 ft), with approximately 570 metres still to climb to achieve its record-breaking status.

Located in the vibrant port city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, this project is not just about height—it is a testament to human ambition and cutting-edge technology.

A New Titan in the Skyline

Designed by the renowned firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill—the same visionaries behind the current record-holder, the Burj Khalifa—the Jeddah Tower is designed to surpass all previous limits. Once completed, it will feature at least 157 floors.

To put its scale into perspective, the Kingdom Tower will be nearly twice the height of the tallest building in the United States, the One World Trade Center (541m).

What Awaits Inside the Megatall?

The JEC Tower is designed to be a vertical city, offering a mix of luxury, business, and tourism. The layout is strategically tiered to maximize value and views:

  • Mid-Section: A prestigious 200-room luxury hotel.
  • Upper Tiers: High-end service apartments and exclusive residences that increase in size and luxury as you ascend.
  • The Peak: A sky lobby, multiple breathtaking viewing platforms, and a dedicated helicopter pad.

The Engineering Behind the Impossible

Building a structure that reaches one kilometre into the sky presents unprecedented challenges. Thornton Tomasetti, the engineering firm leading the project, highlighted three critical hurdles they had to overcome:

  1. Wind Load Management: Determining rational design wind loads at extreme elevations to ensure the building doesn’t sway excessively.
  2. Movement Control: Implementing systems to control both lateral and vertical movements over time.
  3. Material Efficiency: Using advanced computational structural modelling and wind tunnel testing to ensure the design was both effective and sustainable.
