Zach Hyman Injury Update: Oilers Star to Sit Out vs. Golden Knights

Zach Hyman to Miss Oilers Game Against Golden Knights

EDMONTON, AB – Edmonton Oilers winger Zach Hyman will be a scratch for Saturday night’s crucial Pacific Division matchup against the Vegas Golden Knights at Rogers Place. Head Coach Kris Knoblauch confirmed the decision following Saturday’s morning skate, citing a nagging injury as the reason for the precautionary measure.

Lineup Adjustments for the Oilers

The Oilers will reshuffle their top-six forward lines in Hyman’s absence. Vasily Podkolzin and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will swap positions on the top two lines, with Kasperi Kapanen moving into the top six. This strategic adjustment aims to maintain offensive pressure despite Hyman’s absence.

Coach Knoblauch emphasized that the decision to rest Hyman is focused on ensuring his full recovery for the upcoming playoffs. “It was something that he was playing through,” Knoblauch explained. “It was uncomfortable, but a lot of our players are going through something, but it wasn’t getting better. We wanted to just give him some rest so he can heal and be 100 percent for the playoffs. Whether that’s five days or 14 days, somewhere in that window, then we should be good.” He also noted that Hyman would have been available to play if this were a playoff game, highlighting the severity of the discomfort.

Oilers Lead the Pacific Division

The Oilers currently hold first place in the Pacific Division, following the Ducks’ 6-2 loss to the Blues. Edmonton and Anaheim are tied with 87 points, but the Oilers lead due to a higher number of regulation wins. With seven regular-season games remaining, every point is critical.

Golden Knights Close Behind

The Vegas Golden Knights, fresh off wins against Vancouver and Calgary, are three points behind the Oilers in the Pacific Division standings. This game presents a significant opportunity for the Golden Knights to close the gap and potentially set up a first-round playoff rematch.

Oilers Seeking Season Sweep

The Oilers are riding a five-game winning streak against the Golden Knights in the regular season and have the chance to complete a season sweep. A win tonight would extend their lead over Vegas and further solidify their position in the Western Conference playoff picture. A win would also increase the gap to 10 points between them and the final Wild Card spot.

“I think it’s just playing the right way, making them have a hard night and playing them solid for 60,” said Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. “We know these two teams know each other very well. We’ve played each other twice in the playoffs over the last few years, and obviously lots of important games in the regular season. So it doesn’t change much, but we both obviously know where we’re at and what it means.”
