World Cup 2026: Verizon Powers the Connected Fan Experience

As host countries gear up for the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026™, Verizon Communications, Inc. is playing a pivotal role in delivering a connected experience unlike any other. As the “Official Telecommunication Services Sponsor for FIFA World Cup 2026™” and “Official Tournament Supporter for FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™”, Verizon is deploying its advanced technology and robust network infrastructure to transform how fans, officials, broadcasters, and local communities engage with the beautiful game.

A Vision for a Connected Tournament

“Our partnership with Verizon has been pivotal in realizing the vision for the FIFA World Cup 2026™—a truly connected and unforgettable event,” said Nacho Fresco, Director of Technology at FIFA. “The deployment of Verizon’s advanced technology will not only elevate the fan experience inside and outside the stadiums but also ensure a powerful, long-term digital legacy for the host communities. This is about using innovation to bring the world closer to the game of soccer.”

Enhanced Connectivity for Fans

From the moment fans arrive at FIFA host stadiums, they’ll experience reliable, high-performance connectivity. Spectators are expected to consume over 50 terabytes of data per match – equivalent to streaming HD video for over three years! To meet this demand, Verizon has significantly upgraded its network, adding more 5G spectrum to boost capacity by an estimated three to five times across all host stadiums.

Thousands of antennas have been installed under seats, alongside massive ball-shaped antennas, to provide targeted 4G and 5G coverage for fans in all sections. For those travelling to matches or enjoying watch parties, Verizon has deployed nearly 140 small cells and temporary cell sites to boost coverage and capacity in surrounding communities.

Technology Powering the Tournament

The backbone of this world-class fan experience is Verizon’s deployment of advanced technology, including:

  • Private 5G Networks: Delivering secure and reliable connectivity for critical operations.
  • State-of-the-Art Venue Network Design: Optimizing network performance within stadiums and fan zones.
  • High-Speed Fiber Connectivity: Providing a robust and reliable backbone for data transmission.

This technological ecosystem will power critical tournament operations and enhance the fan experience, enabling features like instant replay, real-time stats, mobile concession payments, and seamless social media sharing.

Security and Community Investment

Verizon’s comprehensive security solutions are designed to protect the tournament’s digital infrastructure and ensure the integrity of digital operations. Beyond the pitch, Verizon is committed to leaving a lasting positive impact on host communities by upgrading local network infrastructure, bringing enhanced digital capabilities to neighborhoods surrounding the venues. This investment will support education, healthcare, public safety, and economic development long after the final whistle.

Supporting Public Safety and Small Businesses

Verizon Frontline is working with public safety agencies to ensure they are prepared for the FIFA World Cup 2026™, providing dedicated mission-critical communications support.
