England’s New Kits Revealed for the 2026 World Cup
England has officially unveiled its new home and away kits, set to be worn during the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The kits, manufactured by Nike as part of their substantial £400m deal with the Football Association (FA), represent a return to tradition while subtly acknowledging the nation’s rich footballing history.
A Return to Classic Design
The home shirt marks a departure from the controversial multi-colored St George’s Cross interpretation of the previous design, which sparked debate two years ago. Instead, the latest iteration features a modern, all-white design, a clear homage to England’s footballing heritage. A subtle yet significant detail is the inscription ‘happy and glorious’ on the inside collar, a direct reference to the national anthem, ‘God Save the King’.
Adding a touch of prestige, a metallic gold star is positioned above the crest, commemorating England’s triumphant 1966 World Cup victory. This detail serves as a powerful reminder of the nation’s past glory and fuels aspirations for future success.
The Away Kit: A Bold Red Statement
The away strip reverts to a classic red shirt, moving away from the purple color scheme adopted since 2024. The kit boasts a centered badge and will be paired with navy shorts, creating a striking and modern aesthetic. Like the home kit, it aims to connect fans with the team’s identity.
Avoiding Past Controversy
The FA and Nike are undoubtedly hoping to avoid a repeat of the furore caused by the previous kits. The earlier design, described by Nike as “a playful update to the cross of St George,” drew criticism from prominent figures, including former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who emphasized the importance of respecting the national flag.
Squad Announcement and World Cup Preparations
The kit launch coincided with head coach Thomas Tuchel’s announcement of a 35-man squad for upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan. Tuchel emphasized that these matches represent the “last opportunity for players to compete for their ticket” to the 2026 World Cup. The tournament, set to kick off on June 11th, promises to be a spectacle hosted across three nations.
Kits Available Soon
Both the home and away kits will be available for purchase starting Monday. Nike and the FA aim to create kits that not only look good but also foster a sense of national pride and unity among supporters.
