Koepka’s Immediate Reaction

Playing the par-3 15th, Koepka didn’t hesitate. He quickly moved under the ropes to check on the young girl, identified as Shay, offering comfort in a frightening situation. NBC’s Dan Hicks initially reported the girl was under the cart, which was transporting spectators. However, reporter Smylie Kaufman quickly clarified that she had thankfully avoided serious injury.

“She’s going to be OK after medical evaluation,” Kaufman reported. “Very scary moment.”

Koepka’s Perspective

Following his round, Koepka addressed the incident, emphasizing his concern for the young fan. “Not golf-wise, no,” he said, when asked if the incident affected his game. “I just felt terrible for, I believe her name is Shay, so from all the reports you’ve got she’s okay, thankfully. So that’s all that matters, as long as she’s okay.”

He continued, “I know she’s probably a little scared and I just felt for her at the time. So it’s unfortunate, it shouldn’t have happened, but as long as she’s okay, no, nothing crazy happened to her, then it will be okay.” This display of empathy resonated with fans and highlighted Koepka’s character beyond his athletic prowess.

Tournament Standing

Despite the emotional moment, Koepka continued his tournament play, carding a double bogey at the par-4 16th. He currently sits in a tie for 11th place at four under par, seven shots behind the leader, Sungjae Im.

“I’m a long ways away. I felt like I needed to get to at least, it would have been nice to stay at 6,” Koepka stated, acknowledging the challenge ahead. “I need a real low one tomorrow.”
