Valentin Vacherot Continues His Remarkable Ascent with Monte-Carlo Masters Triumph
Valentin Vacherot is rapidly becoming a name to watch in the world of professional tennis. The Monegasque player secured a significant victory at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters on Wednesday, defeating fourth seed Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(6), 7-5 in front of a jubilant home crowd. This win marks a special milestone for Vacherot, making him the first Monegasque to reach the third round of the prestigious tournament since his coach and half-brother, Benjamin Balleret, achieved the feat in 2006.
This victory isn’t just a local triumph; it’s a continuation of Vacherot’s impressive recent form. It’s his second Top 5 win, following his sensational run to the title at the Rolex Shanghai Masters in October, where he upset Novak Djokovic en route to becoming the lowest-ranked Masters 1000 champion in history. Reflecting on the win, Vacherot expressed his elation: “If someone told me that my first Top 5 win, second after Shanghai, will be here on a night session on the centre court I have been hitting on since I was six years old, it’s nothing, nothing can be done.”
A Match Defined by Resilience
Vacherot’s match against Musetti was a hard-fought battle. In their first Lexus ATP Head2Head clash, the Monegasque player leveraged the energy of the home crowd and demonstrated remarkable composure in crucial moments. He saved a set point in the first-set tie-break to gain the upper hand. Despite a momentary setback, dropping his serve while attempting to close out the match at 5-4 in the second set, Vacherot immediately responded with a break of his own, ultimately sealing the victory after two hours and nine minutes of intense play.
According to Infosys ATP Stats, Vacherot successfully saved three of the five break points he faced and won an impressive 65% (15/23) of points at the net. This performance propelled him to No. 23 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
From Underdog to Contender
Vacherot’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Entering the Shanghai Masters last year with only one ATP Tour win, he has since reached the Round of 16 in four of the past five ATP Masters 1000 events he’s participated in. His current record at Masters 1000 events stands at an impressive 16-6, as per the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.
Looking ahead, Vacherot will face Hubert Hurkacz on Thursday, aiming for a quarter-final berth. “This is where I learned how to play tennis,” he stated, emphasizing his deep connection to the venue. “I needed a set and a half to get on it in the first round. Now my clay court game is back and I am ready to roll.”
Vacherot’s story is a testament to dedication, perseverance, and the power of playing in front of a supportive home crowd. He is quickly establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with on the ATP Tour.
