UNC Wilmington Basketball: A Championship Quest Continues
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The UNC Wilmington (UNCW) Seahawks men’s basketball team is poised to embark on another exciting run towards the NCAA Tournament this weekend. As the top seed in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament, the Seahawks will face off against the No. 9 seed Campbell Fighting Camels on Sunday in Washington, D.C.
For UNCW, the path to March Madness is clear: three wins in three days are required to secure consecutive tournament bids for the first time since the 2016-2017 season. The team’s impressive 26-5 overall record, including a dominant 15-3 performance in conference play, earned them the coveted top seed and their first regular season CAA championship in four years.
Award-Winning Season for the Seahawks
The accolades haven’t stopped with team success. Head Coach Takayo Siddle was rightfully recognized as the CAA Coach of the Year, a testament to his leadership and the team’s dedication. Senior guard Madison Durr was honored as the CAA Sixth Man of the Year, showcasing the team’s depth and versatility. Further individual recognition came with Redshirt Junior Patrick Wessler earning a spot on the All-CAA First Team, and Senior Guard Nolan Hodge being named to the All-CAA Second Team.
Last Year’s Thrilling Tournament Run
Memories of last year’s dramatic CAA Tournament victory are still fresh. UNCW overcame Hampton, Charleston, and Delaware in nail-biting contests, with both the semifinal and championship games decided by a mere four points or less. Donovan Newby’s stellar performance earned him the tournament MVP award, averaging over 16 points per game.
“It means everything to our city to bring a trophy back, we hadn’t won it since 2017,” Coach Siddle reflected after last year’s win. “We’re a very prideful university, a very prideful basketball program and to be back on top is definitely special.”
While their NCAA Tournament debut against Texas Tech ended in an 82-72 loss, the experience served as valuable preparation and fueled their ambition for this year. You can find more information about the NCAA tournament at NCAA.com.
Looking Ahead: The Tournament Bracket
UNCW faced only two CAA losses this season, both against William & Mary and Charleston. Fortunately, these teams reside on the opposite side of the tournament bracket, meaning a potential championship showdown would be the earliest the Seahawks could face them. Their quarterfinal matchup against Campbell promises to be another close contest, mirroring their two previous encounters this season, both decided by a narrow five-point margin.
The UNCW vs. Campbell game tips off at 12 p.m. Sunday from CareFirst Arena in Washington, D.C. WECT will provide comprehensive coverage of the Seahawks’ journey through the CAA Tournament, starting with Sunday’s quarterfinal game.
