UCL Games: Why are Champions League Kick-Off Times Different in the US?
American soccer fans may have noticed a slight adjustment to the Champions League schedule this week as the Round of 16 gets underway. You’ve marked your calendars, settled in front of the TV – whether at home or your favorite sports bar – ready for the elite competition that is the UEFA Champions League. But something feels off… the stadium isn’t buzzing, the teams aren’t on the pitch, and the iconic anthem hasn’t begun. Then it hits you: Champions League games are starting an hour later than usual in the United States.
The reason isn’t a change in UEFA’s scheduling; it’s all down to the timing of daylight saving time changes on either side of the Atlantic. This seemingly simple difference creates a temporary shift in viewing times for US audiences.
The Daylight Saving Time Discrepancy
The United States moved its clocks forward for daylight saving time on Sunday, March 8th. This change temporarily altered the time difference between the US and Europe. While the US enjoys earlier evenings, most of Europe doesn’t switch to daylight saving time until March 29th. This means, for a three-week window, the usual one-hour gap between the regions shrinks.
Typically, Champions League games kick off at 3:00 p.m. ET for viewers on the eastern side of the United States. However, during this March period, those same games now begin at 4:00 p.m. ET. (Early games still start around 1:30 p.m.). This is because European kickoff times remain consistent locally, generally at 9:00 p.m. Central European Time (CET).

Back to Normal Soon
Once Europe adjusts its clocks forward later in March, the standard time difference will be restored. Champions League games will then return to their familiar kickoff slots for American viewers. Until then, US fans need to remember that midweek Champions League matches are starting one hour later than usual.
Time for a quick snack refill!
