Reliving the Golden Era: The ‘Magic Formula’ F1 Exhibition in Portugal

For motorsport enthusiasts, the name Ayrton Senna evokes images of unparalleled speed, precision, and an indomitable spirit. Now, fans have a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with the machinery that defined an era. The Caramulo Museum in Tondela, Viseu, has unveiled its most ambitious project to date: the “Magic Formula” exhibition.

Opening its doors on July 18 and running until October 18, this immersive experience brings together approximately 30 Formula 1 cars, creating a unique sanctuary for those who live and breathe racing.

The Crown Jewel: Ayrton Senna’s Historic Victory

While the exhibition is packed with legends, one car stands out as a symbol of triumph and history: the Lotus 97T. This is the very car that the legendary Brazilian driver Ayrton Senna piloted to his first-ever Formula 1 victory at the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix in Estoril.

Museum Director Salvador Patrício Gouveia emphasizes that the Lotus 97T is not just a piece of machinery, but a significant monument in both F1 history and Portuguese sporting heritage. Along with the Lotus, visitors can also admire Senna’s Williams FW16, providing a comprehensive look at the evolution of the champion’s career.

A Gallery of Racing Giants

The “Magic Formula” isn’t just about one man; it is a celebration of five decades of motorsport excellence. The collection features an array of iconic vehicles, including:

    n

  • Nelson Piquet: The powerful Lotus 100T.
  • Nigel Mansell: The engineering marvel Williams FW14.
  • Michael Schumacher: The dominant Ferrari F2005.
  • Jean Alesi: The Benetton B196 and Jordan 199.
  • Heinz-Harald Frentzen: The Sauber C18.

Beyond the cars, the exhibition showcases original artifacts that bring the cockpit to life, including vintage helmets, racing suits, trophies, and gloves, many of which have traveled from Brazil to be part of this curated collection.

An Immersive Journey Into Speed

To ensure visitors feel the intensity of the track, the Caramulo Museum has completely transformed its space. The gallery is painted in deep black, creating a high-contrast, immersive environment where the cars are the sole protagonists, complemented by background imagery of the drivers who made them famous.

The experience extends beyond the museum walls. At the Caramulo Experience Centre (located just 1.5km away), guests can engage with:

  • Professional Simulators: Test your skills and see if you have what it takes to be an F1 driver.
  • Interactive Kiosks: Challenge your knowledge of F1 culture and history.
  • Local Legacy: Discover the contributions of Portuguese drivers such as Tiago Monteiro (featured with his Jordan EJ15) and Pedro Lamy.

A Grand Finale to Remember

The excitement doesn’t end with the gallery. In October, the museum plans a breathtaking finale: a World Champion will drive an authentic F1 car up the famous ramp of Caramulo, bringing the roar of the engines back to the streets in a spectacular public display.

Whether you are a lifelong fan of Senna or a newcomer to the world of motorsport, the “Magic Formula” is an unmissable pilgrimage into the heart of speed.
