Today, we celebrate the 44th birthday of a true footballing magician, Ronaldinho Gaúcho! While his name is synonymous with the dazzling heights he reached at FC Barcelona and with the Brazilian national team, the European chapter of his extraordinary career began in the French capital with Paris Saint-Germain. Though his time in France spanned just two seasons (2001–2003), it was a period that showcased the raw talent and breathtaking skill that would soon captivate the world.
The Arrival in Paris
In the summer of 2001, Paris Saint-Germain secured a significant coup, signing the 21-year-old Ronaldinho from Grêmio for a fee of €5 million. The young Brazilian had already tasted success, lifting the Copa América in 1999 and impressing at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, drawing attention from clubs across Europe. Paris, however, became the stage for his first foray onto the continental scene.
A Cornerstone for the Future
Under the guidance of manager Luis Fernández, PSG envisioned Ronaldinho as a pivotal figure in the club’s ambitious plans. His arrival immediately ignited excitement among the Parisian faithful. Despite the team’s overall inconsistency in Ligue 1, Ronaldinho consistently illuminated the Parc des Princes with moments of pure footballing artistry.

Across 76 appearances for PSG, Ronaldinho found the back of the net 25 times – many of which were truly unforgettable. He played alongside a talented squad featuring Mauricio Pochettino as captain, and emerging stars like Gabriel Heinze and Nicolas Anelka. However, it was Jay-Jay Okocha who took on a mentoring role, guiding the young Brazilian.

Ronaldinho’s PSG journey began with a penalty against Olympique Lyonnais, followed by a brace against Rapid Vienna in European competition. His form peaked in January 2002, with six goals in six games. But his most iconic moment in Ligue 1? A stunning brace against rivals Olympique de Marseille in Le Classique, propelling PSG to a convincing 3–0 victory. His dribbling, flair, and infectious joy made him virtually unplayable.

That summer, Ronaldinho reached the pinnacle of world football, playing a crucial role in Brazil’s triumph at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. After one more season in Paris, he realized his dream move to Barcelona – where he would evolve into a global icon, a Ballon d’Or winner, and one of the most defining players of his generation.
