Robert Thomas Shines as Blues Edge Avalanche in Thrilling Matchup
DENVER, CO – Robert Thomas etched his name in St. Louis Blues history on Sunday, scoring his first-ever NHL hat trick to propel his team to a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena. The win is a significant boost for the Blues as they battle for a wild-card spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Thomas completed the hat trick with just 2:50 remaining in the third period, capitalizing on a brilliant feed from Jimmy Snuggerud. Snuggerud, displaying exceptional skill, toe-dragged past Martin Necas and delivered a pinpoint pass backdoor to Thomas, who calmly buried the puck past Mackenzie Blackwood.
“It’s taken a long time, so it feels good. A little bit of a relief, but yeah, it’s been a while,” Thomas said, reflecting on the milestone achievement. “Great play by (Snuggerud). It’s a high-end play, and to fake the shot and slide it over, it’s a great play. He made a ton of awesome plays today, and it was a huge reason for our win tonight.”
Blues Benefit from Stellar Performances
Beyond Thomas’s heroics, the Blues received significant contributions from Jimmy Snuggerud and Dylan Holloway, each racking up three assists. Joel Hofer stood tall in net, making 26 saves to secure the victory. The Blues finished their four-game road trip with a 2-1-1 record and have gone 6-1-1 in their last eight games overall.
St. Louis coach Jim Montgomery praised his team’s performance, stating, “That’s a really good measuring stick against an elite team like that. Just the way we kept going to the net hard, the way we played north. We didn’t complicate the game for ourselves, and they’re a good team. They had their opportunities, and it was a great game.”
The win moves the Blues to within three points of the Nashville Predators for the second wild card position in the Western Conference, intensifying the playoff race.
Avalanche Fall Short Despite Strong Effort
Despite the loss, the Colorado Avalanche remain in a strong position, holding an eight-point lead over the Dallas Stars for first place in the Central Division and Western Conference. Brent Burns scored a goal and added an assist, while Parker Kelly also found the back of the net for Colorado. Mackenzie Blackwood made 25 saves in the losing effort.
Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon acknowledged the tight contest, saying, “It was a tight game. I got to watch that last goal. I don’t know why Marty’s playing ‘D.’ Tough way to lose.”
Colorado coach Jared Bednar emphasized the need for improvement, stating, “We gave up too many odd-man rushes again. They got three goals off the rush. I don’t know if we gave up an odd-man rush the entire game last night. We’ve been talking about it a lot, so we got to make sure that we’re committed to it, otherwise you’re not going to win.”
Looking Ahead
The Blues and Avalanche will face off again on Tuesday in St. Louis. The game promises to be another exciting chapter in this developing rivalry. Valeri Nichushkin did not play for the Avalanche due to an upper-body injury and is considered day-to-day.
