Penguins Suffer Shootout Loss to Rangers in Dramatic Comeback Game

NEW YORK – The New York Rangers snapped a five-game losing streak with a hard-fought 3-2 shootout victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Madison Square Garden on Saturday. Igor Shesterkin was the star of the show, making an impressive 31 saves, including five crucial stops in overtime, to secure the win for the Rangers.

Shesterkin Shines in Net

Vincent Trocheck scored the decisive goal in the first round of the shootout, giving the Rangers the edge. Shesterkin then shut down Anthony Mantha and Egor Chinakhov in the subsequent rounds, while Tommy Novak missed the net, sealing the victory.

“It’s comforting (to have Shesterkin), I’m not going to lie,” said New York coach Mike Sullivan. “I think he’s the best goalie in the game. Just his compete level, he’s an elite player. So, it’s comforting to have him between the pipes.”

Rangers Rally from Two-Goal Deficit

Mika Zibanejad and Taylor Raddysh scored for the Rangers (23-29-7), who desperately needed a win after their recent struggles. “It was nice to get the two points, finally,” Shesterkin commented. “We did a great job. Not a good start for us, but from the second period, through the rest of the game, we played pretty well.”

Penguins Fall Short Despite Strong Start

Despite a strong start, the Pittsburgh Penguins (30-15-13) couldn’t hold onto their lead. Mantha and Ryan Shea found the back of the net, with Stuart Skinner making 23 saves in goal. However, the Penguins have struggled in overtime and shootouts this season, with only one win in nine shootout decisions.

“We’ll continue to work (on the shootout),” Pittsburgh coach Dan Muse stated. “We’ll continue to look at it. It just hasn’t been good. It’s on all of us. We’ve got to keep looking at ways we can get better at it. We’ve tried some different guys, we’ve tried some different things, but the results are what they are.”

First Period Action

Mantha opened the scoring at 2:08 of the first period, deflecting a point shot from Erik Karlsson for his 21st goal of the season. A potential second goal by Bryan Rust was disallowed due to interference called against Mantha after a coach’s challenge by the Rangers.

Penguins Extend Lead in Second

Shea extended the Penguins’ lead to 2-0 at 1:59 of the second period, spinning off a defender and firing a wrist shot that deflected off a New York defenseman. However, the Rangers quickly responded.

Rangers Fight Back

Zibanejad cut the deficit to 2-1 at 10:00 with a power-play goal, a one-timer set up by Trocheck. Raddysh then tied the game at 2-2 at 2:57 of the third period, redirecting a shot from Vladislav Gavrikov.

Key Stats and Notes

  • Zibanejad’s goal was his 338th in the NHL, surpassing Henrik Zetterberg for the seventh-most goals by a Sweden-born player.
  • The Rangers’ five multi-goal comeback wins are tied for the second-most in the league this season.
  • Penguins defenseman Samuel Girard returned to the lineup after missing practice due to a lower-body injury.
  • Tye Kartye made his Rangers debut, recording two shots on goal.

The Rangers will look to build on this momentum in their next game, while the Penguins will aim to improve their shootout performance. You can find more information about the NHL at NHL.com.
