Pakistan vs Bangladesh ODI Series: A New Chapter Begins
Pakistan ODI captain Shaheen Afridi addressed the media on Tuesday, clarifying the decision regarding former captain Babar Azam’s exclusion from the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh. Contrary to speculation, Afridi emphasized that Babar wasn’t dropped, but rather, the team is strategically focusing on developing younger talent ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Strategic Shift: Focusing on Future Stars
The decision to omit Babar, who has been a consistent run-scorer for Pakistan with 395 runs in 12 innings over the past year, raised eyebrows. However, Afridi explained the rationale behind the move. “Look, no one is dropped for this series,” he stated. “We just want to give opportunities to our youngsters because they are our future and we wanted to give them the opportunity against Bangladesh.”
This approach signals a deliberate effort to build a team prepared for the challenges ahead. Afridi believes providing these opportunities now will allow the young players to understand their roles and prepare for the World Cup. “When the time comes, they will know their roles and what is coming in the future and we just need to prepare our team for the World Cup, and this is a good opportunity for the youngsters to go out and show their skills.”
Debutants Set to Shine
The upcoming series will witness the ODI debuts of three promising players: Sahibzada Farhan, Shamyl Hussain, and Maaz Sadaqat. Their inclusion is a testament to their impressive performances in domestic cricket. Shaheen expressed excitement about their potential.
“Yeah, there will be like three debuts of course. Sahibzada Farhan will be there. He’s a top performer in T20s and in one-day and also in List A cricket for Pakistan,” Afridi revealed. “There will be Maaz Sadaqat, who will open, and Shamyl Hussain will bat at one down. So there will be three debutants and I hope they will play their own game and show their skills. As a team we are very excited to see them play for Pakistan – not just for this series but for the future as well.”
Pitch Conditions and Familiarity
Afridi also commented on the expected pitch conditions, hoping for assistance for the fast bowlers. He noted that some players have prior experience playing in Bangladesh through the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), which should help them adapt quickly. “I think some of the players already have experience here because they played in the Bangladesh League and for them it will feel quite normal because they already know the ground and the pitch. They understand the conditions, so I hope they will play their best cricket.”
Series Schedule
All three ODIs will be held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. The schedule is as follows:
- 1st ODI: Wednesday, March 11
- 2nd ODI: March 13
- 3rd ODI: March 15
