Orioles Score: Jackson Holliday’s Injury & Road to Recovery
BALTIMORE – While Jackson Holliday won’t be in the Orioles’ Opening Day lineup on Thursday, the future remains bright for the young infielder. The 22-year-old is embarking on a crucial rehab assignment, aiming for a return to the field and contributing to the Orioles score as soon as possible. Holliday is scheduled to begin his recovery with the Triple-A Norfolk Tides, playing in their season opener against Nashville on Friday.
Holliday’s Hamate Bone Fracture & Recovery Timeline
This marks a significant step in Holliday’s recovery from a fractured hamate bone in his right hand. He underwent surgery on February 12th and was subsequently placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to Sunday). The injury occurred on February 6th during batting practice at the O’s Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Florida. President of Baseball Operations Mike Elias announced the unfortunate news, stating Holliday would begin the season on the IL.
Despite the setback, the outlook isn’t entirely bleak. Holliday is eligible to return on April 1st, just five games into the Orioles’ season. However, given his absence from Spring Training and the entire Grapefruit League schedule, his rehab assignment may extend beyond that initial date. He did manage some live batting practice before camp broke and participated in batting practice and fielding drills during the pre-Opening Day workout at Camden Yards on Wednesday.
“I think it’ll just be how I feel,” Holliday recently stated. “If I get four hits a game, I’ll probably be up a lot quicker. But depending on how I feel [will decide] how quickly it goes. But hoping for a quick turnout.”
Looking Ahead: Holliday’s Impact on the Orioles
Upon his return, Holliday will aim to build on his promising 2025 season. Last year, he showcased significant improvement, hitting .242 with 21 doubles, three triples, 17 home runs, 55 RBIs, 17 stolen bases, and a .689 OPS across 149 games. This was a notable leap from his 2024 debut, where he hit .189 with a .566 OPS in 60 games.
Orioles Roster Adjustments & Other Injuries
In Holliday’s absence, Blaze Alexander and Jeremiah Jackson are expected to share duties at second base. Alexander, acquired in a trade with the D-backs on February 5th, is likely to start against the Twins on Thursday. He’s a versatile player capable of playing across the infield and outfield.
Holliday is one of seven Orioles players currently on the injured list. Andrew Kittredge (right shoulder inflammation) is also nearing a rehab assignment with Norfolk. The recovery timelines are less certain for Keegan Akin (left groin strain), Heston Kjerstad (right hamstring strain), Jordan Westburg (partial right UCL tear), and Colin Selby (right shoulder inflammation). Félix Bautista (right shoulder surgery) is expected to return no earlier than September.
