Ivanie Blondin Secures Silver at Milano Cortina 2026
Ivanie Blondin has added to Canada’s growing success at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games, winning a silver medal in the women’s mass start long track speed skating event. Blondin finished strong, crossing the finish line in second place, only behind the Netherlands’ Marijke Groenewoud in the thrilling 16-lap race. Mia Manganello rounded out the podium, claiming the bronze medal.
The race was a stark contrast to the men’s final, which saw a breakaway early on. The women’s event remained tightly contested for the majority of the race, setting the stage for a dramatic sprint finish on the final lap. This strategic racing showcased the incredible endurance and tactical skill of the athletes.
A Historic Achievement for Canadian Speed Skating
This marks the third time the mass start event has been included in the Olympic program. Blondin’s silver medal builds on her previous success, having won Canada’s first Olympic medal in the event at Beijing 2022. She now boasts an impressive collection of four Olympic medals, including back-to-back gold medals in the women’s team pursuit alongside Valérie Maltais and Isabelle Weidemann.
While Valérie Maltais faced an early setback with a spill, she demonstrated remarkable resilience to finish fifth. Her determination exemplifies the spirit of the Canadian Olympic team.
