Oliver Bearman Surprises with Strong Qualifying in China
Shanghai International Circuit witnessed a remarkable performance from Haas rookie Oliver Bearman during Saturday’s Sprint Qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix. Starting just outside the points, Bearman secured a promising P9 on the grid, exceeding expectations and igniting excitement among Formula 1 fans.
Bearman Admits Points Fight Was Unexpected
The young Briton expressed his surprise at being competitive for points, especially considering pre-weekend assessments. “On the face of it, I’m quite impressed and surprised by the gap to the leaders,” Bearman stated. “We seem to have closed it a little bit compared to last week, and honestly prior to the weekend, I was not expecting to be in the fight for the top eight.”
Bearman’s consistent pace throughout Friday’s Sprint Qualifying sessions was key to his success. He finished seventh in the single practice session and then advanced to SQ3, demonstrating a clear improvement in performance. “We showed really good pace already from lap one of FP1 and we were able to build on that and go forward,” he explained. “It was a tough session, the balance was a bit on edge and difficult to put the lap together but we got there in the end and happy with P9 today.”
Points Within Reach for the Haas Rookie
With points awarded to the top eight finishers in the Sprint race, Bearman believes a points finish is a realistic goal. He noted that Red Bull’s pace doesn’t appear insurmountable, offering a potential opportunity for Haas to capitalize. “It looks like if we get everything right tomorrow we can actually score some points, and then obviously in the race on Sunday, that’s where it gets serious.”
Ocon Faces Challenges with Car Performance
Meanwhile, Bearman’s teammate, Esteban Ocon, faced a more challenging Friday, finishing 12th in qualifying. He expressed frustration with the car’s performance, stating, “Not really pleased, we can’t be pleased with that. We are working hard to obviously get the car where we want it to be.” Ocon remains optimistic that improvements can be made before the Sprint and the main race on Sunday.
Looking Ahead
The Chinese Grand Prix promises to be an exciting weekend, with Oliver Bearman emerging as a driver to watch. His impressive qualifying performance has set the stage for a potential points finish in the Sprint race and a strong showing in the Grand Prix.
