Three Keys to Victory for Nevada Basketball

1. Dominate the Free Throw Battle

Grand Canyon boasts the No. 27-ranked defense in the nation (according to KenPom), a formidable barrier surpassed within the Mountain West only by New Mexico and San Diego State. Nevada previously faced challenges against these top defenses, scoring 73 and 68 points respectively. However, the Wolf Pack has demonstrated offensive firepower in other conference games, averaging 77.7 points. While Grand Canyon’s defense is solid across the board, particularly in limiting three-pointers and offensive rebounds – areas where Nevada excels – the Antelopes commit fouls frequently (26.5% of opponent possessions). Both teams draw a significant number of fouls, making success at the free-throw line crucial for Nevada, especially on their home court.

2. A Stellar Performance from Tayshawn Comer

Nevada’s point guard play has been inconsistent, but the team’s success is undeniably linked to the performance of Tayshawn Comer and Tyler Rolison. When either guard is playing at their peak, the Wolf Pack becomes a tough opponent to beat. Comer currently receives the majority of minutes at the point, and his recent form is a key factor. Over the last eight games, Comer is averaging 10 points while shooting 36.8%, a dip from his earlier average of 16.1 points on 43.9% shooting. Regaining his offensive rhythm is vital for Nevada’s long-term success. Against Grand Canyon’s strong guard play, a standout performance from Comer is essential. He has the potential to control the game’s tempo and exploit defensive weaknesses.

3. Protect the Paint

Grand Canyon’s offense (157th in KenPom, 9th out of 12 MW teams) has shown improvement recently, increasing from 106.2 points per 100 possessions in non-conference play to 111.3 in Mountain West action. While their three-point shooting remains a weakness (30.3%), the Antelopes feature dynamic guards like Jaden Henley (17.2 ppg) and Makaih Williams (13.1 ppg) who excel at driving to the basket. These two have combined for 173 “close twos,” averaging over nine shots per game near the rim. Grand Canyon’s offensive surge is largely due to improved two-point shooting (53.2%), meaning Nevada must prioritize defending the paint and preventing easy baskets.

Prediction: Nevada 73, Grand Canyon 69

This is the only regular-season matchup between these two teams. While a trip to Grand Canyon’s home court is notoriously difficult, Nevada’s offensive firepower should be enough to secure a close victory at Lawlor Events Center. The stakes are high, as this game could significantly impact seeding for the Mountain West Tournament. Grand Canyon is riding a three-game winning streak against Utah State, San Diego State, and Fresno State, but potential absence of key starter Brian Moore Jr. could prove detrimental.
