Nate Oats Remains Focused on Alabama, Dismisses UNC Rumors
Alabama head coach Nate Oats recently addressed the swirling rumors linking him to the vacant head coaching position at North Carolina. Following Hubert Davis’ dismissal, Oats joins a growing list of prominent NCAA tournament coaches who have been asked about their interest in the prestigious role. However, like his peers, Oats emphatically expressed his desire to remain with the Crimson Tide.
Currently preparing for a Sweet 16 matchup against Michigan on Friday, Oats addressed the UNC job during his press conference. “I’m not a guy that’s trying to always jump around,” Oats stated. He added a cautionary note, acknowledging, “But the grass is not always greener. I love Alabama. My girls love Alabama. They’re here with me.”
Loyalty and a Vision for Championship Success
Oats praised the administrative support he receives, singling out Athletic Director Greg Byrne as “the greatest AD in the country.” He expressed a strong desire to continue working with Byrne for the foreseeable future. His commitment extends beyond personal preference; Oats emphasized Alabama’s dedication to competing for national championships as a key factor in his decision.
“They’re doing everything they can to make sure that we’ve got a competitive program,” Oats explained. “As long as we’re able to compete to win championships here – SEC, national championships, we haven’t done that here yet. I’d love to be the coach to bring us our first national championship. To me, there’s absolutely no reason to leave here.”
Oats firmly stated he hasn’t engaged in any discussions with North Carolina, nor does he plan to. His current contract with Alabama runs through 2030, and he confirmed ongoing talks regarding a potential extension, though no offer has been finalized.
Other Coaches Weigh In
Similar sentiments have been echoed by other coaches in contention. Michigan’s Juwan Howard, also mentioned in connection with the UNC vacancy, highlighted the importance of family in his career decisions, citing his family’s desire to remain in Ann Arbor. He also praised Michigan’s commitment to both athletics and academics.
Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd acknowledged the UNC job as one of the best in college basketball but lauded his current position at Arizona. Iowa State’s T.J. Otzelberger outright denied any interest in other opportunities, emphasizing the strong alignment between his program and university leadership.
UNC Search to Remain on Hold
With several coaches still actively competing in the NCAA tournament, a definitive resolution to the UNC coaching search is unlikely until the conclusion of the season. North Carolina’s decision to part ways with Hubert Davis followed a disappointing first-round exit in the NCAA tournament, creating significant pressure to find a successor who can restore the program’s winning tradition. The dismissal opened up one of the most coveted positions in college basketball, demanding a careful and thorough selection process.
