Montreal Canadiens Trim Training Camp Roster: Who’s Heading to Laval?

The excitement is building in Montreal as the Canadiens de Montréal prepare for another thrilling NHL season. As part of the natural progression of the preseason, head coach Martin St-Louis and the management team have officially made their first set of training camp cuts.

In a move that was largely expected by analysts, 12 players have been released from the main camp. While these cuts may seem abrupt, they aren’t exits from the organization; rather, they are strategic moves to strengthen the Laval Rocket, the team’s AHL affiliate.

The Players Moving to the AHL

The following players will now report to the Laval Rocket to continue their development and maintain their competitive edge:

  • Vincent Arseneau
  • Jacob Dion
  • Aiden Dubinsky
  • Braden Hache
  • Hunter Jones
  • Francesco Lapenna
  • Alexander Legkov
  • Kevin Mandolese
  • Kale McCallum
  • Israel Mianscum
  • Josh Nadeau
  • Xavier Simoneau

Preseason Action and Final Roster Pressure

The hustle doesn’t stop here. The Canadiens de Montréal are diving straight into the action with two simultaneous exhibition games against the Ottawa Senators. To give as many players as possible a chance to showcase their skills, 40 of the remaining 45 camp participants will be suited up for these contests.

However, the clock is ticking. According to NHL regulations, the team must trim its final roster down to just 23 players before the regular season kicks off.

Looking Ahead: The Clash with Toronto

All roads lead to Tuesday, where the Montreal Canadiens will face off against their historic rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs, in the season opener. For the players remaining in camp, every shift, every hit, and every goal now counts toward securing a permanent spot on the ice for the 2024-2025 campaign.

Will Martin St-Louis surprise us with some unconventional roster choices? Only time will tell, but the foundation for the season is being laid right now.
