Mönchengladbach vs. St. Pauli: A Battle for Bundesliga Survival
Borussia Mönchengladbach’s sporting director, Rouven Schröder (50), is aiming for a crucial three points against St. Pauli as the threat of relegation looms larger. Despite a slim points cushion, Schröder remains remarkably confident, issuing a bold prediction ahead of Friday’s clash (8:30 PM CET/Sky).
“St. Pauli has been attempting to shift the pressure onto us, suggesting we have more to lose,” Schröder stated. “But that doesn’t bother us at all; we gladly accept the challenge. May the better team win – and that will be us!”
Embracing the Pressure
Schröder’s optimism stems from his belief in the team’s ability to handle the high stakes. “I am completely positive. We can deal with the pressure. We need the pressure. That’s what sports are all about, that’s why we do this. It will be a challenge, and our boys are eager to take it on,” he explained.
A Familiar Opponent
This will be the third encounter between Mönchengladbach coach Eugen Polanski (39) and St. Pauli this season. The 4-0 victory at Millerntor showcased one of Mönchengladbach’s best away performances in the Bundesliga. However, the 1-2 defeat in the DFB-Pokal round of 16 at Borussia-Park was a definite low point in Polanski’s managerial career.
Reflecting on past matches, Polanski stated, “Of course, we will analyze both games. Hopefully, our benchmark will be the first encounter, allowing us to secure the three points.”
Team News & Tactical Adjustments
Rocco Reitz (23) is suspended following his red card in the 1-4 loss to Bayern Munich, but Yannik Engelhardt (25) returns from a yellow card suspension. Wael Mohya (17) will start on the left wing in place of Hugo Bolin (22). Polanski hopes Mohya’s inclusion will energize the crowd: “When fans see Wael’s name in the lineup, it brings a smile to their faces. Like against Union Berlin, we need to ignite Borussia-Park and get the fans fully involved.”
Schröder’s conviction is clear: there can only be one winner. The stakes are high, and Mönchengladbach is determined to fight for survival.
