MLS Standings Watch: Toronto FC Bolsters Defense with Benjamín Kuscevic Loan

Toronto FC Adds Chilean International Defender Benjamín Kuscevic on Loan

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Toronto FC has significantly strengthened its defensive line with the acquisition of Chilean international defender Benjamín Kuscevic on loan from Brazilian Série B club Fortaleza. The announcement, made Thursday, sees Kuscevic join the team through the 2026 MLS season, with an option for a permanent transfer.

This move marks Toronto’s second key addition to their center-back corps this offseason, following the free agency signing of veteran Walker Zimmerman. The bolstering of the defense is a clear indication of Toronto FC’s ambition as they look to improve their MLS standings and compete for a playoff spot.

A Proven Veteran

“We are happy to welcome Benjamín to Toronto FC,” stated General Manager Jason Hernandez. “Benjamín has established himself as a strong defender and steady presence in prominent leagues in South America and in international competition. We look forward to his quick integration with the group and our work together during the 2026 campaign.”

Kuscevic brings a wealth of experience to Toronto, having amassed an impressive record of 12 goals and 2 assists in 244 professional matches. He rose to prominence with Universidad Católica in Chile, where he contributed to seven title wins. His career also includes successful stints with Brazilian top-flight clubs Palmeiras, Coritiba, and Fortaleza, securing eight trophies during his time with Palmeiras. You can find more information about the MLS standings and team performance on the official MLS Soccer website.

International Experience

On the international stage, Kuscevic has earned 14 caps with the Chilean national team, demonstrating his ability to perform at a high level. His experience will be invaluable as Toronto FC navigates the competitive MLS standings.

A Remade Backline

Kuscevic and Zimmerman are expected to form a formidable partnership at the heart of Toronto’s defense. They will be supported by left-back Matheus Pereira, acquired this winter from CD Santa Clara in Liga Portugal, and right-back Richie Laryea, who is projected to represent Canada at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This revamped backline is a key component of Toronto’s strategy to climb the MLS standings.
